nForce 650i and Yorkfield?

I'm currently running an E6400 @ 2800 (1400MHz FSB) on an MSI P6-N SLI (nForce 650i) mb. I'm getting the itch to do some more surgery on the ever-changing PC, and want to start with a new CPU, but not the MB yet (due to time retsraints).

I'm liking the E8400/E3110, but the Q9450 looks intriguing, too. Except, it's not supported on my mb, and I think I read somewhere that NO 650i mb supports yorkfield. But I can't find that webpage again, or any other that states whether it's a chipset limitation, or if it's just that no BIOS has been written.

So, does anyone know? Will it be impossible, or if I wait a little bit, will a firmware/BIOS possibly show up?

BTW, I've sent this question off to MSI, but I don't expect an answer. I've asked them a question once before, and never got a response.

I know that the 680i explicitly does not support it, and I assumed that the 650i was in the same boat.

MSI Support claims they do not have full support for the new 8400's with this mobo or any onther new Penryn chip at this point. So you will not be able to run any of the chips listed above.

i highly doubt there will be a firmware / bios fix, all of the 6x0i boards i believe need some circuitry change in order to support the 45nm quads (result of nvidia withholding sli license from intel i believe since the earlier engineering samples of the yorkfield were working good). as for wolfdale (dual core) chips, there might be some hope for you, the 680i series for sure can run the 45nm dual cores with a bios update but not the 45nm quads.

However, I wouldn't buy one.

Yeah, ASRock changed some circuitry on their 1600Penryn Board to support yorkfields. Older 600i series boards do not because of microcode changes.

According to the CPU support page for the P6N-SLI, the Wolfdales are supported since BIOS 2.5 (current one). An E8400 is OK. No Penryns currently are.

Oddly, the Xeon E3110 is under testing. Maybe it does have some physical differences from the E8400?

Basically just another case of Intel changing the power requirements. Anyone here remember early 865PE/875P chipset boards claiming "Prescott Support" on their boxes... which ended up NOT supporting Prescotts? Yup.

FIXED

(Yorkfields, Wolfdales, Harpertowns, and Penryn (Mobile) are all "Penryn")

Just an FYI, I've been able to get good responses to my questions on the support forums for MSI found here.

Here is a thread regarding the 8400 specifically., looks like there are some that have already thrown and E8400 on the 680i and it works...
