Nforce is way too expensive

I looked at the opening price of the Nforce and it is way too expensive. And considering that its MSI whose boards are usually moderately priced only leads me to believe that boards by Asus and Abit will probably top the $200 mark easily. The chipset seems to be equal with the KT266A in terms of performance with a small lead. But I believe Ndivia with integrating all that stuff went way overboard. And because it has all that stuff integrated the price will be very slow to drop. And the drop will not be significant either. I am really not in love with any of them actually. They all seem to leave a bit to be desired. But the Nforce seems way out in left field.

It's early yet, the price will drop.

For all that comes on this board it should be worth it.

Some of us really like it way out in left field Classy. Yes, the nForce boards are more expensive. I think that they should be with all of the extras! I've been waiting for this thing to be released since August, and I'll gladly pay a bit of a premium.

The only benefit here is if you build it from scratch, then yes it's a good price. If you already are a system builder/hobbyist then no, it's gonna be a waste if you have parts left over you can use.

I was at first drawn in by the hype of nForce but now I'm dissapointed that it will not be the motherboard killer some claimed it would be.
Granted it's early in there game plan and they are at least pulling up even with the K266A in some of the benchmarks I've seen. Truthfully though, I think we expected a lot more from nVidia even if this is there first outing. After all these guys are no sloches in the vid card market.

I can remember not that long ago when I had a Diamond TNT card and 3DFX were the undefeated champions of the video world.
That changed very quickly and we all know the outcome.

So while it's to early to say how all the nForce boards will turn out and where there going, still I think VIA has the edge and my next system will be a K266A one. Maybe in two years time when we see an nForce ultra it may be the one to have, but not now.

One motto I was taught at a very early age "never be the first one to ever buy a new product first". If your in the first wave your a beta
tester by default.

Just my 2 cent ramblings....

I think with the features involved it is at a good price point. I will be needing a lot of new equipment when I do my next build because I will need to keep my main machine running as a secondary machine and the older machine I have now has an ISA soundcard and a lame video card, so I will probably pick up an nForce and save money in comparison to an MSI KT266A solution with a 5.1 soundcard purchased separately. I will probably use the onboard video at first as well and if I decide I need more performance/features then I will pick up a separate card later. It seems like a pretty good solution for me.

Smith I am thinking along the same lines as you. Outside of the nice onboard sound its really a waste of money. First of all its not faster. And what edge it does have in certain areas its pretty much negible. Second with all that onboard stuff the price to produce the board is very high. And the chipset itself is like almost double the price of the KT266a. That will make for very slow price drops. That onboard video is just not up to snuff. I will agree if you want an all inclusive solution it might not be that bad, but for most users I think it is way over bloated. It would have been nice if they had the chipset without the video. The lan is not useless but dialup is still the main way people connect to the internet. So thats more bloat-ware. I like the chipset but I would be very surprised to see those boards go for less than $170 shipped anytime soon. I liken this to the AMD 761. Just now your starting to see the prices of the better boards drop below $150. So considering Nvidia is even more expensive to produce, I think these boards will be expensive for a few months to come. I just wish they would have produce one identical without all the trimmings. Hell you can catch lan cards on sale for $10 or less.

Well from the people I have talked to I just don't see any market for that board, The people that want me to build them a intergrated system it just cost way to much right now and the others want to pick their parts for their computer so it will have to drop down in price and I still don't see much of a market for it

Most likely, Nvidia didn't have "Joe the PC guy" in mind when the deciced to produce this board. Odds are they were aiming at getting some of the big box computer manufacturers that they sell video cards to on board with nForce.

I see nforce as being useful for budget Duron systems to let AMD compete with crappy celeron+810/815 systems. Compare an nforce Duron-1GHz system against a Celeron (even 1.2) and the duron box will slaughter the celly in performance, especially 3D gaming and sound. It might do pretty well against budget P4/SDRAM systems too, since they usually include an GF2-MX (at best).

It would be nice to be able to recommend dirt-cheap systems from HP, eMachines, etc. to friends on a budget who want _some_ gaming potential.
