nForce2 Motherboard Questions

All,

I'm heavily leaning toward purchasing an nForce2 motherboard to replace my current GA-7VAXP. Before I do, respectfully solicit input from this forum on the following questions.

1. First of all, I need at least one RAID connection I can use as an IDE controller to support two additional IDE devices (six IDE devices total should be good). As for the type of motherboard I'm looking for, I don't need serial ATA, don't need an integrated video card, don't care what sound options it has as that's not important to me, and hopefully a motherboard that has passive cooling. Is this possible, and what are good motherboards that fit these parameters, with extra IDE connectors being my primary concern?

2. I've read in some forums that there may be a problem with nForce2 motherboards causing a "whine", don't know what causes this other than perhaps a weak power supply. As for other reports of the problem, I got the info here: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=4034&highlight=nforce Has anyone had problems with this, and did you do anything that rectified the problem?

Thanks much in advance,

hawkeye

1. I'd suggest the ABIT NF7-S Version 2.0 if you really need that extra IDE connector (use the Serillel adapter for your non-Primary/Secondary IDE drives). This board is quite solid too, which is the other reason I suggest it.

2. Never heard of this, I wouldn't worry about it.

By the way, any particular reason you chose the handle "hawkeyeJN"?

Thanks for the response, I'll check into that board. Glad to hear you haven't heard of an nForce2 whine.

As for my handle, I use hawkeye since I'm orginally from Iowa, and JN since I'm now living in Japan. Hawkeye is almost always already taken, so just looking for a variation of it.

You noticed that too eh? I was going to ask but figured someone else would...

As to the "whine" check out nforcershq.com. (Hope it's OK to mention other forums.) Some folks get it, some folks don't and different fixes posted under their audio section.

Note that they have an audio section.

Thanks for the tip on the nForce site. I'm checking it out now.

Really surprised at the curiousity at my handle. If you're Iowans I can understand it, and if from Iowa hopefully Hawkeye vs. Cyclone fans!

Thanks again for the help.

As to the curiosity of your user name, it's due to a former AT member, HaweyeNJ.

Chaintech 7NJS has a RAID IDE port in addition to serial ATA and seems to be highly rated (though not cheap). I'm looking at this one myself, since I also need IDE RAID.

There is a review at AT and another at HardOCP

i don't if you are aware, but there was a user of these foums named HawkeyeNJ. very cool guy, had to pleasure to PM him dozens of times. then one day he just vanished without a trace. there was some speculation that he perished in 9/11. weird.

A well known and well respected member, HawkeyeNJ, is believed to have been a passenger on one of the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center.

First the not-so-serious subject. I was also looking at the Chaintech, price is a little high. Aopen makes the AK7ND-MAX passive-cooled nForce2 board with an extra IDE channel, looking at that now. Anyone have any experiences with this board?

On a serious note, if what you believe to be true of HawkeyeNJ actually happened, that's a tragedy. Somewhat coincidentally my brother, who's still in Iowa and travels on occasion with the some of the teams, was at one time good friends with the president of the Hawkeye Club chapter in New Jersey (which, I"m sure, is what NJ was for). If you have further leads I can try to track down more definitive info for you.

I'm coming up on 26 years of service in the Air Force, and since 9/11 somewhat involved in helping to track down these bad guys. We'll prevail in the long run, rest assured on that.

I've been going through the same scenario. The Chaintech board looks great but would be the most expensive mobo I've ever bought. Despite high regard by several reviewers for this board the user base is low and tech suppport distant to non-existent. The Asus Deluxe by comparison has at least 10X as many users from whom most of us will draw our actual support.

Using an ATA converter on the channels provided is more cost effective than getting the Chaintech for its third IDE port, and a few folks report a performance boost over the IDE channels in doing so.

For what it's worth, I ended up getting the Aopen AK79D-Max. Also bought an IDE to SATA converter to compliment the third IDE channel that comes on the board.

I'm not big into overclocking, other than perhaps minimally challenging my system. My goal is to build a quiet PC, and to do that I'll need inherently quiet components while at the same time avoiding heat issues. Building a better, faster computer system is more than a "want" than a "need", so I'm trying to find the best mix of that and something that can run 24/7 where people sleep without BSOD heat-related issues.

Thanks for the help everyone gave me here...much appreciated.!

That's very thoughtful, but I don't think anyone would mind you keeping your name. But if you'd like to switch post in forum issues with your request and a mod will take care of it. IIRC, someone actually came up with a real name for HawkeyeNJ but my memory is hazy.
