Se&eN S1N: It may be possible you have a hardware problem as far as the sound is concerned. Very few people seem to have reported problems with the nVidia sound drivers. It is mostly the NAM and NV Firewall that have the maximum complaints. Though in my case even that was not the case, I installed NAM and the firewall of the 6.53 drivers and fooled around with it for a few days - no BSODs, no issues of data corruption, etc. nothing in the event logs (except the HDD0 errors at boot). I just preferred Sygate and then did not see any point in installing NAM/NV Firewall. With the 6.66 drivers, even the HDD0 errors have reduced considerably, the last one was just 2-3 times 9 days ago.

But coming back to your problem, I recently had a similar issue with an older system where the SB Live sound card failed. XP would either BSOD or simply not load whenever the creative drivers were installed (or even XPs native WDM driver installed itself). I finally removed the sound card physically and now the system is rock solid again.

I've discovered the culpit of my BSOD, it's caused by nv4_mini.sys . it's got issues with bios shading etc and irql value not equal to etc. gonna go into bios and see if I can repair it. I've discovered it only crashes when it runs video, not my previous caused by sound sorry for the miss understanding and information, everyone can ignore that now I hope.my apologizes

The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was C0000005 from line 44 of d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp.

this is the error that I started to dig up in event viewer caused by Nv4_mini.sys

if anyone's got any ideas please give me a hand.

thanks in advance.

AFAIK, nv4_mini.sys has to do with nVidia's display drivers. Leave the bios settings at default and try and re-install the dsiplay drivers. I did have a couple of COM+ event log errors but that I think was caused when I installed Power DVD and resulted in a fight between Power DVD and Creative Media Source (basically both seem to want to take control). I re-installed Creative Media Source and have not had any more COM+ errors.

OK, ok I know both are junk but they sort of work for me and came free so...

i just put together new parts and i'm not impressed with nvidia ide drivers, they cause my brand new hitachi sata ii 250gb to grind upon windows startup, event viewer shows 'paging fault on device0/d'

brand new hd, mobo, cpu, video card, case, ram

not installing nvidia ide drivers does not have this problem

msi neo4 plat came with 1.3 bios.

updating to 1.6 bios (on a clean reinstall with ms ide drivers where data corruption was ruled out) seems to have fixed the problem for now.

perhaps it is a mismatch between bios/driver versions, ie as old bios versions don't run nicely with newer drivers?

Yes, quite possible. In fact Asus website says to have latest 6.66 or 6.65 drivers installed before updating to latest bios to prevent BSOD/crash. Normally bios update should have nothing to do with drivers (e.g. what would you do if you had to re-install OS? on the updated bios MB?) Presumably Asus means that new BIOS will work better with latest drivers.

I have the same issue as well. I am currently reformatting and loading the older 6.53 drivers afterwards.

Called ASUS and talked to a higher-up at their technical support, he said he hadn't had a single call re: this problem (i'm guessing most people solve the problem by going to forums and don't bother waiting on hold for a few mins to alert the vendors), so I gave him all relevant information on it. He said he'd pass my conerns on to the engineers and that in turn the engineers would talk to Nvidia about the driver issues. However, I honestly doubt that anything will get done unless people CALL and complain about this issue. So people, pick up your phones and put that free long distance to use!

I have a problem no one else seems to have or notice.... I know i didn't notice it until recently...

Even after uninstalling NAM, it seems to somehow still be running! I didn't notice until I shut off my antivirus and windows gave me the warning that my antivirus was off, but when I looked at the firewall, it states that nvidia firewall is still on!!!

This was proven by the fact that my ports are still blocked off when using bittorrent or other file sharing programs.

Can someone please please please let me get rid of this god forsaken program.

Hi,

I fully installed the dirver version 6.66 without reporting any error. (I did it after installed XP with SP2) The only error I have with this driver version is random reboot system. (without any reason) To fix the problem, I tried to uninstall the NVidia IDE driver included. The problem seem to be fixed now. Any comment about my experience will be welcome?

XP Sp2
Abit AN8 Ultra (NForce4)
AMD 64 +3200 Venice Core
1Go Ram (2x512 Corsair)
GFroce 6600 (Asus Silencer PCI Expres x16)

Well I got my first 1003 error and BSOD when Doom 3 was shifting levels. This happened after more than a month and after applying the latest D3 patch and 1006 A8NE bios. Till then D3 could be played without any issues for quite some time (max. I have played continuously is for 1 1/2 hours). It has not happened again. Also as such I have not got any data corruption. So I will stick with the 6.66 and wait and see.

I suspect that the nVidia drivers do seem to be having some timing issues relating to disk i/o, especially with SATA HDDs, that is why the BSOD at the time of shifting of levels, when the autosave got triggered. I also get HDD paging errors at boot up once in a few days.

I suggest if you are happy with the speed of the MS IDE drivers, stick with them till nVidia releases a new version, otherwise... Which HDD do you have?

I'm not happy with MS IDE driver, but for the moment is an alternative of IDE NVidia Driver. I would like to find an other solution. I have a Hitachi 80Go SATA 150. With the NVidia IDE Driver (from 6.66 Driver package) I got a more long time to load XP, and sometime XP crachs and reboot without finish to be loaded completely. Someone is experiencing this troubles? Sandep, it's confirm your theory, isn't it?

They work fine for me and my "old" nForce3 250-Ultra board. MUUCH better than the 5.10's that I was using (I admit, I was scared to use drivers that didn't list my chipset under the compatibility list ).

ma2xfr: Another thing you can try (I have never done it) but it may be possible to flash the firmware of your Hitachi HDD and may help.

I felt the 6.66 are better than the 6.53. Since I only set up my system about a month back, I have never installed any other drivers. I did fiddle with the NAM/FW and audio drivers. They did seem to work ok for me, but I liked my Sygate firewall and got an Audigy 2 ZS and with so many people unhappy with the NAM/FW, did not install it on my final install of the OS.

The 6.66 drivers are stable for me. Installed all drivers, including the IDE ones, but not the audio drivers (used the Realtek ones instead). No problems whatsoever. Performance is great.

Edit: Using Windows XP Professional 32-bit. The 64-bit IDE drivers (when I used Windows XP Professional x64 Edition) were unstable, though. They stopped XP from logging in properly. >_o

i thought the 6.66 drivers were stable as well... except counterstrike source and other source engine games randomly started locking down every few minutes... then i couldn't shut off my firewall, even after disabling and uninstalling... Gave up and got a fresh boot with no nvidia ide drivers and no firewall along with ac97 drivers.

riceknight, you haven't installed the IDE NVidia Driver to get a stable setting? Why?

In fact can you tell me what is your motherboard model? Because, I think, the random reboot troubles are only for Nfroce 4 ultra model (or maybe only for the Abit AN8 ultra, I don't know...) Now I'm using the 5.10 version of Nvidia IDE Driver instead of the 5.35 included in the 6.66 Nforce driver package. For the moment the system seems to be stable without random boot and Xp is faster to be loaded. May be I could have a problem with my hardware : it's why I need a feed back for this driver (6.66) and only for Nforce 4 ultra motherboard model. Otherwise, the driver 6.66 seems to be stable for me without the IDE Driver.

Thank you for your comments...

Solution !!!

I found why my motherboard driver 6.66 was not stable. In fact, it's memory problem. I just tested my memory, and memtest (v3.2) has found some errors ! It was not a problem with the NForce IDE Driver. I'm sure now the driver will be stable after the replacing of my memory by new ones.

Regards, and thank you for your comments.
