I'm going to get an nForce4 Ultra board pretty soon (as soon as SATA II HDD's appear...hopefully Raptors?), and I want to know if anyone is able to get Cool 'N' Quiet working with 32-bit or 64-bit Windows XP. If so, please list your board, the unified nForce driver version you're using, and the OS.

I currently have an nForce3 Ultra (K8N Neo2), and Cool 'N' Quiet only works with the bundled drivers that came on the motherboard CD. If I do a fresh install of XP 32-bit SP2 and install any unified nForce driver other than the one on the motherboard CD, no dice. However, if I first install the drivers on the CD then upgrade, I can get it to work. With Windows XP x64 RC2, I cannot get Cool 'N' Quiet to work no matter what drivers I use (just giving a little background info as to why I'm posting). I'd just like to know what Cool 'N' Quiet's status is like on nForce4. Thanks.

I had it working but shut it off for gaming. WinXP 32bit, Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, NVIDIA 6.39's. Worked like a charm.

Yeah, I saw those 7K80's a while back. I'm holding out for SATA II Raptors, though. Anywho, has anyone else gotten Cool 'N' Quiet working on an nForce4 board?

i dont have an nforce4, but cool and quiet works fine in winxp sp2 with the amd drivers on my ati rs480 board.

in win2k however installing the drivers led to numerous random reboots. even after it was uninstalled that problem continued

(A8N-SLI-DLX) Help - I am assuming you need to use all 3 pins (wires) from the CPU Fan connector on the MoBo directly hooked up to the CPU Heatsink/Fan.

I have a Thermaltake Venus 12 on my AMD 64 FX-55, it has 3 connectors:
(1) A 3-pin female connector with only 1 wire from the Venus 12 that I plugged into the CPU Fan connector on the Mobo.
(2) A 2-pin male connector with 2 wires for the temperature sensors, and
(3) A 2-pin female connector with 2 wires that I connected to the manual fan RPM controller.

I would prefer to use AMD Cool n Quiet - so I am guessing that you need to use all 3 pins of the CPU Fan connector on the Mobo. This would require cutting off the connector going to the fan controller and inserting it into the 3 pin connector going to the mobo. Has anyone ever done this? Problems?

Also - Does anyone have the Thermaltake Venus 12? Anything out there a little quieter?

Thanks.

I have the Asus A8n-SLI Deluxe and Cool & Quiet works fine for me! No problems what so ever. I don't use it but I will offer this as I wanted to get it to work and was having similar problems as were described above. Keep in mind have all the latest updates now and everything is working very nicely. If you?re having troubles then try this:

Go to Control Panel, then to Power Options, then Power Schemes. Select Minimal Power Management. Make sure Cool & Quite is enabled in your BIOS.

I hope this solves your issues, it did mine

MatrixVPR - I guess I wasn't clear - do you need to use all 3 pins from the CPU Fan connector on the mobo to control the TT HSF? The 3-pin connector coming from the TT HSF only has 1 wire - can the systems control fan speed (RPM) with a single wire or is this a simple on/off connection? I guess what I am asking is do I need to modify the wires / connectors coming from my HSF to the CPU Fan connector on the mobo?

Ah, well yes you need all 3 connectors to get the Cool & Quiet to work. I had the Volcano 7 and it sounded like I had a Honda Vetech in my computer case so i returned it and got the Zalmen 7000b-Cu all copper and wow what a difference. it uses the regular 3 pin fan connector and is dead silent (in silent mode, which is what I keep it in)

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-118-113&depa=0

Right now i have my CPU overclocked and no Cool & Quiet! The fan is at 1814 RPM, Temp is 41C 105F. The A8N-SLI kicks up the Fan at a default of 71C and I turned it down to 51C so when I?m gamming or running benchies I can hear the fan go up then back down but just barley. The Zalmen never lets my CPU past like 58C. The connector that you have with your Volcano that connects to the mother board will just supply you with your RPMs and that is it!

Good luck

Is your AMD a Socket 939? Did the Zalman install go well / quickly?

I have the same MoBo as you goofball! yeah it's a 939 and the installation was extremely easy. However, your going to have to get the the back of the board because it comes with it's own backplate/mounting bracket. If your not keen on having to take out the MoBo then your not going to want the Zalmen. If you do get it i recommend the new version of the one i have i believe it s the 7000a-Cu. They also have a 120 version that I think i have herd of people getting to fit bu you'll have to check around. I know that alot of people have these Zalmens weather it's for their AMD or their Intel. People can't say enough i do like it better than i did the Volcano. If you have the FX-55 then you have the 130 nm core and that will run a bit warmer than my 90nm 3200+ not to mention that It's an FX, but if you do a bit of browsing threw the forums then you'll see that the Zalmen is the poop!

Your right - I am a goofball. Duhh. Same mobo! D'oh!

Okay - taking the mobo out will be a PITA, but doable. I am going deaf listening to this TT Venus.

Do you know if the Thermalright requires removing the mobo? That new XP-90 is pretty sweet. I really want to avoid going to 120 version since they take up so much room.

Board: DFI nF4 Ultra-D
unified nForce driver: 6.39
OS: 32 bit WinXP

Cool 'n Quiet is working for me. At least the PowerNow! Dashboard says it is cutting back the voltage and CPU speed. What do I need to do to have it control my fans?

You have the DFI so I'm not sure how the board or the BIOS is setup, for myself and most of the other people in this thread we have the Asus A8N and their is a setting in the BIOS that will throttle down your fan till it reaches a certain temp. I would look in your MoBo manual and see if it says anything about fan controlling.

BTW - I picked up an extra CPU Fan lead, clipped / stripped the wires, clipped the yellow wire coming from the HSF, and the two (RED & BLACK) wires from a separate connector on the HSF, and got the TT Venus 12 to be fully controlled by the BIOS/OS. Cool N Quiet is working okay, however, it seems to have only 2 gears when controlling the HSF: 2250 RPM (silent) or 6000 RPM (deafening).

I am going to eventually get me a different HSF. This Venus 12 sucks. I even bought some Arctic Silver to see if that would improve things.

My AMD 64 FX-55 runs about 30' C at light load and 2250 RPM on the HSF, and at 40'C while dooming. Which is surprisingly high considering the Lian Li V10000 has so much ventilation.?.

Well if your getting those kind of GOOD temps then you don't need a fan that causes hearing loss! As long as you?re below 60C you have nothing to worry about. My system is Idle at around 41C but i have poor ventilation low Fan RPM (1700) and I'm overclocked. My volcano could be herd through my headphones and that is just unacceptable. My Zalmen maxes out at around 2600 RPM and is hardly audible If I leave it at max then my temps drop to the mid to low 30's. I like my silence!
