NIC driver question

I have a Dell Precision M6300. With the latest WPA2 crack I was hoping I could update this driver, but it looks like I might be out of luck? http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/precision-m6300/drivers

I also use the Asus Merlin firmware in my router a N66u and I guess I don't have to worry about the router as this hack is client side only?

You mean the KRACK? If it's a Windows machine then it's patched. Yes WiFi routers only have to worry about it if it is being used as a client. If you use that router to connect to another router wirelessly or is using a specific type of MESH standard.

To further add, IOS and Android are or will be patched very soon. The big issue is Android. They put the patch out, but your device may not get it... which highlights the big issue with Android.

A windows update will patch a vulnerability because Windows handle the WPA2 negotiation, if I understand correctly.

I'm not sure what you mean by WiFi firmware...

In addition to above. It is not specific to WiFi firmware. The software that handles the WPA2 handshake is the issue. For devices I suppose you can categorize that as firmware, but on Windows/IOS/Android the OS handles the handshakeyshake.

You could use your Dell account to subscribe for the driver updates regarding Precision M6300. Once they publish new driver update, soon you will be able to receive it.

I don't have a Dell account. I actually bought the laptop bare bones on eBay and stuck it together. But that reminds me. I created a forum account at Dell support and asked there, but I don't think I got a response.

Also you should try disable and enable the NIC. By enabling the disabled wireless Network Interface Card, you can solve many minor problems.

Once you have an account with Dell, you should opt subscribe option for the driver notification.

The driver may not need to come from Dell. Look at Device Mgr for which you want to update and the chipset, something like Intel 3945ABG or whatever the Dell 1370/1470/1390/1490/etc. is. You can look at the associated driver files and then what chipset those apply to, or look at the hardware properties for Device ID #s, then see if the chipset manufacturer or an alternate OEM offers it.

go to support.dell.com and put in the express service tag or regular tag. it will return the drivers...

even if the NIC never gets another driver update, microsoft patched it.
