Broadband Basic has no e-mail but I already get my e-mail through Mindspring. Mindspring/Earthlink offers free authenticated SMTP for dialup accounts (http://support.earthlink.net/mu/1/psc/img/walkthroughs/Help_FAQ/7280.psc.html). I pay $9.95/month for my dialup/e-mail because I have a business address there. (I'd be paying for that e-mail regardless of which DSL service).

If you want 640 down/up to 256 up, the DSL goes up to $28/month. Unfortunately, my line does not qualify.

If you have access to your own POP/SMTP server, this beats Qwest/MSN by a long shot.

-Broadband basic is $6.99 per month. What is the download speed?
-Choice DSL is $15 per month.
Do you have to have both to use the DSL or can you just have the broadband basic to use it?

Broadband basic (BBB) takes the place of having to use MSN, Qwest.net or any other ISP. The choice option runs the live hardware connection. BBB replaces the ISP.

$15/month only covers the DSL connection. With all DSL, you need both a line *and* a service provider (ISP), which (for qwest) typically costs $18-$32 more. The extra $7/month replaces the ISP. You can use the web, but you can't use news (NNTP), e-mail (qwest.net or msn.com or whatever), and so forth unless you have some backup such as yahoo mail, mindspring dialup, etc.

And if you want faster service, it's $28 for 640k down/256 up per month.

p.s. I got a decent deal on my cellphone too. I'm now paying $18/month for "Loyalty Anytime 500". Again, I only stick with Qwest on the cell phone because they offer "One Number". When my cell phone is on, it's automatically my home phone number. When it's off, the phone at home rings instead. Between the new DSL service and the new Cell Phone service, I'm saving something like ?$40? per month over what I used to pay.

It's still the same sucky Qwest connection that I've had for several years now. I'm just paying less and dumping the normal Qwest.net ISP. Because I'm at the end of the service line, I get tons of line tap. So on my best days, I get 200 up and 400-500 down.

is qwest still only do 640k on their "deluxe" package? The company is such a joke...when I moved out of Denver my whole outlook on DSL changed when I realized every other DSL provider in the nation gives you more speed for less money.

Is this a temporary price reduction? How long with this $15/$28 rate last?

I didn't find any info at their website to indicate if this was a promotional price plan or not. The Qwest promotional price plans have a tendency to expire at 3 month, 6 month, or one year intervals whereupon you then get the service at a higher price.

I actually ordered online - accidentally ordered a modem and emailed them to cancel the modem order.
BUT, below the acknowledgement that says they cancel my modem order, they wrote:

When I called them to ask what the price increase was all about, they're all confused.
Finally they said that I don't have QwestChoice package phone line (basically phone line + caller ID + other stuff for $25.99/mo) so they can't give me the $15/mo price. It should be $21.95/mo + $8/mo ISP (not $7, btw.. the website change or something?) = $30/mo..

<sigh> Not sure what to do now because I'm not sure if that guy knows what he's talking about.
