iWon't? What happened, did they come up with this idea sitting in a Starbucks talking on their iPhones, and publish the site using iMacs, all while listening to edgy music from their iPods?

There are a lot of verizon employees picketing outside the store near my house, I was wondering what it was all about.

So it really sucks to work there? When I was in college a friend of mine worked there and said they paid really well, with decent benefits. Did this change?

If corporations werent brutally efficient they would cease to exist and we wouldnt have their services. People didnt cry when they were giving us jobs and low-cost services & products. Where was the outcry against corporate efficiency then?

There is one area (NYC) where there are some VZW union employees under CWA. The rest of VZW is non-union.

Verizon on the other hand is completely union. Verizon is picketing, and for a presence they do it in front of VZW stores. There was a sharp distinction between working for either side, at least when I worked there. There was no lateral movement between the two companies as far as the workforce. But that may have changed, I haven't been there in a while.

Not much has changed. Landline continues to die. Wireless side continues to ride the Gravy train. Part of telco evolution

So the Verizon (just Verizon, not Verizon Wireless) employees are the ones going on strike, right? I remember hearing that a few months ago. Just landline workers.

I'm all for employees getting fair benefits considering how extremely overpriced health insurance is these days, but on the other hand it's hard to make a case for continuing to put a lot of money into a dying industry.

Seems that it would be more fair to offer more money to the Verizon Wireless people since they're making a killing, but then again there are way more employees.

The contract between Verizon and CWA / IBEW has been up since early Aug 2011. Workers are currently working without a contract. Biggest issue, is Verizon wants all sorts of givebacks that the unions worked to get over the past 30-40 years. This includes wanting both employees and retirees to pay for health care coverage, both with an Annual Premium and with Plan Deductibles, both of which would go up each year. Retirees, especially can not afford this. It is one thing for the company to want to have New Hires pay for health care. For current employees and retirees, this was bargained into our contracts and for most of us, we retired, expecting it to remain, as it should.
And I am a retiree from Verizon NY since 2003

so... the beef is between verizon and its union, but the union has ads besmirching verizon wireless?

smells like a lawsuit. verizon is only half owner of vzw.

Those poor guys laying fiber for FIOS are only pulling in $250k/year with overtime. I think they deserve at least $500k.

Verizon is the parent company of Verizon Wireless. And I also agree, their fees both for Landline and Cell phone service is bordering on insane. You can not even get a voice only cell phone from them without going into the really crappy models. I do not want, need or need to pay for a data plan that I do not require. And they are always changing the bill, usually by some extra tax or some bullshit. Verizon is one example of corporate greed getting out of hand. All they want is more, more, more and they do not want to honor the contracts made with the unions.

Kinda like every private sector job. This greed is the reason we need to get rid of unions entirely.

Course, it looks like Verizon is simply going to tack on that 2 dollar convenience fee onto online billpay.

Unions, in and of themselves are not the real problem. The problem is corporate greed. Who needs executives that make $10M or more per year, before bonuses and stock options ? ? ? Do they really need 2 mansions (say a winter and summer one), a new larger yacht every year or the newest exec jet or helicopter ? ? I can understand a change in who pays for health insurance for new hires, since they know that will be the way it is when they are hired. But not for people that have earned them over the many years of service we have given the company.

It took me a minute to realize "verigreedy" wasn't the worst mocking of a name I've ever heard.

EDIT: What makes middle-class workers any more special than lower-class ones?

Show me where in the contract between union and VZ is guaranteed forever? As you stated the east contract expired in August of this year, so a new contract must be negotiated. VZ honored what the contract stated until it expired, if it was not honored, a lawsuit can be filed. Unions are not entitled to anything and Verizon is not entitled to anything.

Yes I agree the fees are ridiculous but that is the price of free market system.
