The Williams sisters haven?t played at Indian Wells since 2001. They were booed after Venus pulled out of a semifinal match against her sister, citing knee tendinitis. Serena went on to win the title, but was booed during and after the championship match.

I'd have to say that perhaps the crowd saw this as one sister bowing out to the other (possibly thought of as the more likely to win?), instead of playing her, which the crowd looked at unfavorably. Can't say I'd blame them for that, as it would seem like it just made it easier for Serena to win, as she had fewer people to win against once her sister bowed out.
