Is it just me, or is anyone else concerned by the fact that the shuttle looks beaten to hell and back, as if they'd pulled it out of a scrap yard?

What do you expect it to look like? They strap that thing to big ass rockets and blast it off into space, and when it comes back down it's a big firey ball of plasma for a while too.

finally, someone who understands what shuttles go through! its not like driving your car, god*amnit!

You should see it fly by. It is so big, that flying low, it looks like it will fall out of the sky.

(seen it many times flying along coast at Cocoa Beach before the certified runway for direct landings).

You people are making me feel old! Don't any of you remember when they tested the shuttle back in the late '70's and this is how they did it? Put it on the back of the 747, ascend to 40,000 feet, release the shuttle and watch it float back down to Edwards AFB.

I better go take some more Geritol...

Oh yeah - that's a COOL pic!

LOL! That would be an interesting sight.

No, the 747 just goes into a gentle descent and releases the shuttle from its perch - the shuttle and the 747 are going the same speed and the shuttle basically glides straight ahead while 747 continues descending out of the way. There must be a video out there somewhere...

 haven't you watched Top Gun?

They land that sucker on to the 747 in mid-air right after re-entry. I saw a video of it awhile ago.
