pretty good info. the thing about linux is that it got tons of HOWTOs and other docs.
just endless source of information! so anyone can become an expert if they read
all these online docs.

I love this HOWTO. This thing is really in depth and goes step by step through alot of different aspects of the Red Hat OS. I have found alot of stuff in here that I had no idea existed. You wouldn't believe all the little security holes you never even though about. I would recommend this to anyone that administers a Red Hat box.

You gotta be paranoid to protect your box these days.... If you're not, you will get cracked in no time.

The best part is most of the things in that doc can be applied to any Linux distro and not just RedHat.

Thanks for posting this. Do you have any other howto's for linux? I am a newbie... but in about 11 months, I want to have a server machine to be used as a firewall at university to protect my windows machine. (network and dsl internet) Is this possible? Or, should I just go buy a router or both? (i also want the machine for an internet server, ics and a file server)

There are plenty of HOWTOs that flourish on the 'net. Linuxdoc.org is one of the best ones that I have found.

You could easily use a Linux box as a router/fileserver/firewall. You can use packet forwarding for the router and iptables for the firewall. They are both pretty easy to nail down.

If you want to go the easy route and get a "all in one" package, go and download Clark Connect. It is a Red Hat 7.1 distro that is basically tweaked to make a router. Read up on that. I have it running at my home and have been for about 5 months now and I have not had a problem with the 3 machines that I was running it off of. Very good for the newbie.

Well, this doesn't have too much to do with linux, but I have had sluggish internet lately. I recently reformatted my server (since it was running 98se, LOL) Unfourtunately, I am still running 98se on there, since I only have a 420meg hard drive in the thing. My pings seem to be about 50ms higher than usual, slower downloads, and the modem doesn't seem to be able to receive and send without pausing more. The only difference from before, is, I am now using sygate instead of the built-in ics of 98se. Any ideas? Thanks.
