If you want a pure no-frills sports car, I'd go with: S2K, 350Z, or used Boxster. If you're wanting somewhat of a smoother ride, I'd go with a Z4 or a G35 Coupe.

maybe because the mustang cobra isnt a sports car.

of the cars listed, the only cars that are true sports cars are the s2k, miata, 350z and the z4.

The Porsche 911 Turbo has a back seat too, and no-one would call it a "half-assed sports car". I love the S2000 and I'd love to own one but it would be way too high strung for a daily driver. The Mustang will be more practical, a better daily driver, and it won't be significantly less reliable. Plus, your mothers car should be her own decision unless there are strong financial/reliability/safety reasons for vetoing her choice, which there are not with the Mustang. A daily driver needs to have more than two seats if you have a family. It's just that simple.

Tramples the other cars in terms of class and performance. Tad pricey.

I personally think that the s2000 is the better car between the Nissan 350z and z4 in terms of driving excitment.
The only problem is that the suspensions are very hard, so the car can get a bit uncomfortable after a short while.
You should check it out though.
