i don't know what to do, because i have $100 in bitcoin in their internal wallet, maybe its not much but i live in third world country, and my income is not really great, even tough my wife is working too, especially right now i have children to take care, .

I'm so sad right now and its almost Christmas.

Moved from VC&G since this really isn't a technical discussion.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully Nicehash has contingencies in place. Where do you live? Maybe we can throw some crypto coin your way. Post up your addresses.

While a kind gesture, unauthorized charity between members
regretfully cannot be asked for or proposed here because of the
distinct possibilities of fraud and abuse.

I don't know of any similar alternatives to nicehash from a mining perspective, but there are other bitcoin wallets out there. If you need help, PM me your btc wallet address and I can send a little coin your way to help.

This has happened before. I think these "banks" simply wait until there's a bunch of money on their site and steal the money themselves. Makes sense to me anyway. Wouldn't put it past them. Can't trace bit coin, right? That whole block chain thing means its just gone, scot free right? It was probably them who stole it and they blame hackers. Heh, right. "Hackers".

i'm with moonbogg on this one. just as BTC hits record highs, poof - some of it is gone. someone made a $68M exit.
but also i think it would be difficult to actually get the money out of those BTCs. the tax authorities in whatever country this "hacker" is from, would like to know the origins of the money if it is ever used.

I'm not, the economics of such an operation make it extremely more profitable to just continue business as usual. Unless other (external) factors come into play, there's no incentive to risk everything (including freedom) for money they were gonna make anyway.

Yeah, sad times all around. AFAIK this was just the 'cache' wallet, aka what buyers pay into and what hashing sellers get paid from, not their internal wallets (for those using nicehash wallets) but I could be wrong. It was already pretty irresponsible to keep all of this in one dump unprotected, it'd be a lot dumber if they also kept user BTC in the same wallet. I assumed it was a different ones for each user, or something, but who knows.

There's a few rough alternatives, I haven't gotten a chance to dig into them, but apparently Winminer and Awesome Miner are decent alternatives, I'll be investigating them tonight. If NH comes back up and the profits are roughly equivalent, I'd probably just stick with them. I lost a grand total of about $20 of electricity, or maybe $80 of lost profit if you want to look at it that way, but some would have lost quite a bit I wager. I guess it all depends on how they come out of this.

I disagree that this was internal, unless it was a disgruntled employee or something. They make (were making?) money hand over fist from the mining fees, it'd be shooting themselves in the foot to even steal $60m.

Sadly, I also agree on this.

They cry they were "hacked" but it was most likely a inside job. There is just too much $$$ to be made, and none of these places have any contracts or any other legal way to hold them accountable.

So, user beware, you have ZERO recourse when something like this happens. About the best you can do is spread it around, so all your eggs aren't in the same basket.

Yep, this is like the wild west. You get some gold and keep it in a pouch. Good luck with that. It will get stolen. Bitcoin is like that. Anyone clever enough or in the right position can simply take it. That's it! They take it.

Criminal employee?

99% sure this is the case. External attacks are usually well guarded against these days. Internal not so much. That said, I can't imagine why any exchange or pool would store all their crypto in one live wallet. Does Nicehash do that much business that they needed 60 million live?

As much as I like the idea of cryptocoins, this is one of the downsides, it's completely unregulated and subject to this kind of thing. Then again look at the whole Equifax fiasco, government does not seem to care about it and Equifax is not being held liable for it.

I was actually toying with buying some to see if I can make a quick buck off the crazy rate it's going up latetly but it seems all the sites want personal info like SSN etc. Yeah... not giving that. I'm late to the game anyway.

This is why there will never be a Bitcoin ETF. SEC won’t go for it (then again, stranger things are possible with Trump...)

Isn't there already one starting in the next few weeks?

I was wrong...looks like we already have one (Ticker: GBTC)

I kept reading about the Winklevii wanting to start a crypto currency ETF but running afoul of SEC requirements. Not sure when this one started.

A place that pops up "sign up now and get 1btc" because I didn't register fast enough seems a bit sketchy to me.

Look, all I can add is:

Don't mine BTC (mine something like XMR)

Don't deal with anything more complicated than a mining pool.

Seriously, you don't need to use a service like hicehash or anyone that wants a SSN. I've been using nanopool while providing them with 0 personal information. All they have on me are my rig names, my IP, and my crypto addresses. I leave my crypto off-exchange to avoid nonsense like this. People needed to learn from Mt. Gox to leave wealth off the exchanges.

NH getting hacked has forced me to learn a lot more about mining and wallet safety...

I was using the Nicehash wallet as my main storage, realized a few days before they were hacked that I should find a more secure way to store my $$.. hadn't settled on one and then POOF, it's gone.

I really hope I can get it back eventually.. had over 3 months solid of earnings on there... $900usd when it was hacked, worth more like $1300usd now.

Ouch.

Now I'm mining VTC
