Night sweats from overtraining?

So this weekend I was kind of naughty. More than kind of, actually. I was so naughty that I had to spread the additional calories I consumed over the next 4 days in order to account for all of them.

Yesterday I decided to try and make up some ground with a marathon session on the treadmill. I know it's not a great idea to try and "out work" your food intake, but all I wanted to do is give myself some breathing room over the next few days.

I put on a movie and basically watched the whole thing while walking briskly (between 3.5 and 4.5 mph for the whole stretch) at a 15% incline. You may think walking on the treadmill isn't that intense, but at that incline at an almost jogging pace it really gets the heart rate up. As I watched the calorie counter on the treadmill flip from 999 back to zero while I still had over 40 minutes left to walk, I wondered if maybe I was overdoing it.

So I finished the movie after having burned over 1500 calories according to the treadmill's calorie counter. I know that's not accurate, but it still had to be a pretty impressive number in actuality. I figure I can assume 1000 calories safely enough anyway. I was completely soaked through with sweat and more than a little wobbly as I limped back to the shower.

That night I slept HARD, but I kept waking up having soaked completely through my sheets and comforter with sweat. I mean it was sopping to the point that I could have squeezed water out of it a couple of times. My assumption was that I had overdone it with the cardio and what I was suffering from was a symptom of overtraining. Despite that I do feel particularly well-rested today, so I'm not sure if I'm over it or not. Anyone else experience something like that after a particularly challenging workout?

Can't say I've ever experienced that. From any form of cardio. Ever. And this is coming from somebody doing 12 mile+ runs that burn in excess of 1800 calories.

I only get that type of sweats from alcohol or running a fever.

What's your height/weight/age?

Night sweats are usually either caused by your body running a fever, then the fever breaking...(cold sweat from returning back to a normal or only slightly elevated temp)....OR from an increased heart-rate when sleeping...which might be something you'd want a doc to followup on.

Height - 5'11.5"
Weight - 185 lbs
Age - 33

I'm in good shape generally. I exercise every day with a mix of cardio and resistance training. I've lost a lot of weight over the past year, but I've been holding at 185 for about the past month.

I feel like the fever thing is maybe a possibility. I've got a wicked sore throat that's been building over the last 3 days or so. I don't feel like I'm running a fever now, and I don't have any other symptoms at the moment, but I recall feeling pretty achy and tired in the days leading up to that night. Maybe that's all there is to it.

Never had that happen to me. When I did overtrain with cardio (I worked out at night), my symptoms were I had a really hard time falling asleep. It's like my body couldn't turn itself off to rest even though I was tired and wanted to sleep. Always listen to your body, I took that as a lesson and didn't push myself past that limit again.

If you had a sore throat, it could be strep. I'm pretty sure I got it recently too because both of my kids had it (tested positive)....but I didn't go to the doc. The risk of strep is greater for kids because it's bacterial and not viral...so complications can include rheumatic fever and inflammation of the kidneys. Both are generally rare, but one damages the heart, one damages the kidneys....that's why doctors always prescribe antibiotics for strep.

If you can, hit up a doc office and have them do a strep swab. Tell them about the night sweats and ask them to listen to your heart/lungs too for anything. It's funny, but a good doctor can detect more than you would expect with a stethoscope.

It was strep. My sore throat worsened every day since I made that post and finally I couldn't bear it any longer today. Went to the doctor, got a cortisone shot and and prescription for antibiotics, and I'm feeling better already. That cortisone stuff really works. This'll be the last time I let something build for a week like that before seeing someone.

Hi,
I've noticed that I'm having this kinds of night sweats while I'm consuming whey protein. Are you taking any supplements?

Nope. No supplements whatsoever. I'm more on the side of it being the beginnings of my strep throat or whatever it is. This stuff is killing me. I haven't been able to eat much for the past 5-6 days and it just won't go away. The doctor is going to change my antibiotics tomorrow if it's not better by then. I'm going on a week and a half with this though. Gah it's horrible.

I'm sorry to hear that. I strongly recommend to take a break from sporting activities if you aren't able to eat and drink water. This way you will avoid injuries

Some of dreaming is the mind practicing what you've learned throughout the day.

For example if you've been concentrating on improving your golf swing, especially just before bed, or during the day in a trance state, you will likely dream about golfing.

You likely dreamed about running, causing your night sweats. Probably nothing to worry about. Bonus: Free sauna!

I did something like that when I was younger. Just thought I had a bad cold with a bad sore throat. After a couple days I could barely swallow and was unable to eat or drink without a lot of pain. I don't know what the hell I was thinking, but I let it go for over a week, during which I drank maybe a quart of water and ate almost nothing. I somehow managed to drive myself to the ER, where they shot me up with two giant horse-syringes full of penicillin and gave me a script for more.

I felt a lot better within 24 hours and was back at it in a couple of days. Do you mean to say that it's been a week since you saw a doc and you're still not better?

BTW, I don't think the term "overtraining" can be used with regard to a single workout. It generally describes the condition where you're training to the point where it's doing you no good or even harming your performance.

I would see a doctor about that. There's some more....unpleasant reasons for night sweats like you're talking about. I'm sure in your cause it's just your body adjusting but wouldn't harm in taking a look.
