night vision googles

has anyone here purchased night vision googles? I am thinking of purchasing them just for fun. You can read an article about them here: Link. I was wondering if it was worth purchasing a pair (for the fun of it) and also what type/brand to buy?

Someday I need to get a pair. I live out in bfe and lots of times I can hear big packs of coyotes within 75 yards or so of my house yipping and wailing and crap. It'd be interesting to see wtf they're doing out there.

I don't know about blinded, but many NVG's will turn off if exposed to a bright light.

you kinda do. Your NVG sorta white out, and in the dark that would ruin your nightvision. Hence the newer models have a slight delay, cuts off the image if it detects a spike in light intensity.

My friend had a Russian surplus pair. They were cool as hell. Outside they worked MUCH better then inside. You could make out shape, but no facial features vey well. Outside they really shined though, and were great fun.

And yes, you'll be blinded if someone shines a light at you. Night vision = light amplification. Think about it. Newer models have protection circuits to shut down the amplification if they detect high light levels...But you'll still be blinded by having no light. Old models....They'd just fry the optics if you werent careful.

Worth it? Jeez, I dunno. Depends what model. My friend has a PS-1 or something like that. Good NV gets expensive FAST. Cheap NV is just blurs and fuzzy shapes....Hard to justify the price for the performance with NV.

On the whole though, if you have a justifiable use and can afford it. HELL YEAH! Otherwise, there one damned expensive toy.

I had a a pair of Russian Nite Vision Goggles . They looked more like a mono binocular . Worked very well,cost $200 . After they had served the purpose I had bought them for , I sold them.

At ITT, we would build demo systems using parts that didn't quite meet military specs (which were very stringent). We could use these goggles for showing customers and whatnot, or we could borrow them for personal use. I have used them in the woods under a pitch black canopy, and you can see perfectly. These are a huge reason we won the Gulf War so easily (these and IR imagers used in aircraft). But, you will not get this type of performance for anything less than $3,000. Yes they are commercially available, at a somewhat lower performance level than the Gen 3 military stuff. The russian stuff is garbage. Sure it only costs $150 bucks. And you get what you pay for. They are at best low quality Gen 2. Most of it is Gen 1, which is no better than a flashlight.

And they do not blind you when someone turns the lights on, ala Patriot Games. You can turn them on outside on a sunny day and nothing will happen to you. The only problem is that an image will burn into the tube easier, like old CRT monitors used to do.

so is there no such thing as a pair of good cheap NV goggles? If you were to make a recommendation, which one should I buy?
