iamme, They offer special pricing on the website. However, when I called up I complained a little (nicely) and the CSR sold it to me for the same price as the website. It has just arrived at my desk - literally.

Is anyone else having a problem with the flash upgrade? Although the upgrade program says the upgrade has been "successful," the player does not seem to have actually been upgraded. The flash upgrade isn't "sticking."

I've never had to flash any other device (Mobo BIOS, CDRW firmware, etc.) more than once for it to work. I'm puzzled by this.

The flash procedure worked fine for me. I read the readme and installed the Windows driver first. Then connected the player and switched it on. After Windows found the player I ran the flash upgrade and it worked fine.

Yep same here. No probs with my firmware upgrade. I'm guessing those 4 songs came preloaded? Kinda funny how they edited them before they stuck em on there.

I got a 10% coupon in the mail. valid from dec 7-9. If you go back to best buy, and apply the coupon to our past/current purchase you should get nike player for $22 after rebate. because its $10%from purchase the rebate is mir. $22 for a nike is even better huh.

Didn't check my mail, but can you do that? Thought stuff like this explicitly say "not valid on previous purchases" or something to that effect. Guess you could always do a return/rebuy and apply the coupon.

Hey, to you guys who successfully flash upgraded your firmware, what does the battery indicator look like and where on the remote is it visible? I've flashed mine 10 times "successfully" but still no indicator.

Damn, i got on this late. I gotta head to BB later and check if htey have it. But they have the same deal at Frys if BB is out. And Frys had a ton of them...

Anyway, I encoded a load of mp3's to wma for my ipaq and the .wma's sound great and take a fraction of the space.

Converting .mp3 to .wma

Go to the download center
Microsoft Media Player Download Center

There are two apps that will do this. Windows Media Encoder 7.0 or Audio Converter 3.0. I couldnt link the actual app so use the dropdown to grab the app you want.

Audio Converter 3.0 is part of the Windows Media Player Bonus Pack
-This one offers Audio Converter 3.0 (limited edition) which works great for batch conversions

Windows Media Encoder 7.0
-This does only one at a time, but you can be more specific on quality and it also does video.

I had about a gig of video in avi or mpg and i dumped it all to .wmv and it now only takes 300mb but has the same quality. So converting your mp3 to wma then you can easily fit 20 songs on 32MB so its worth it. On my ipaq, I have 40 songs on a 48MB CF card. MS really did good with this thing.

It's never a good idea to re-encode one lossy-encoded format to another, unless the first encoding was significantly higher quality than the second.

I.e. ripping the original CD audio to WMA is not a bad idea; converting mp3 (which is lower quality than the original CD audio) to WMA is only going to worsen the loss of quality. This is particularly true because each audio codec out there has different deficiencies. Converting from one encoding to another will effectively SUM the deficiencies.

An example of an exception to this general rule is taking MPEG 2.0 encoded video (DVD) and re-encoding it to DivX (or mpeg4 or whatever). In this case, the DVD video is such a high quality that this is not a flawed procedure. You still need technical expertise to successfully encode video of course (whereas encoding audio these days is largely point and click).

Thanks for the links! I dl'd the Player and Converter and I gotta tell ya "shrinking" my original mp3's to WMA (64) rather than mp3 (64) has been a pleasant surprise. The WMA sound quality is noticeably better than the mp3. I was starting to get disappointed with the sound coming from the Nike[psa but these WMA's sound really good.

DOES NOT WORK EVEN WITH OLD SOFTWARE. I would just return the MMC memory back to Dell.

$30 is not bad for 32 meg anyways, i can squeeze in 17 64 bit WMA songs

<< I got my Sandisk 64MB MMC Card, but now the Nike Audio Program crashes whenever I have it in there (yes it's in the right way).. Any ideas? >>

same here... i'll give you all the full story.

i picked up one of the psa[play 60's at the black friday sale at CC. CC wanted $140, this is not a typo, $140 for their Sandisk 64meg MMC card (they have since updated their price to a more reasonable amount of $80). knowing that was a LUDICROUS price for MMC i picked up a 64meg kingston card AND a Zio! MMC reader for $47 total from dell when they were having their 25% off accessories sale. the cheapest place i've been able to find Sandisk (read below for why it needs to be Sandisk) MMC memory is buy.com at $48.95 and $5.02 for shipping.

i got it home, cracked it open and fell in love with it. awesome shape, functional design, sweet deal... i mean $30 for a mp3 player... AWESOME!!!! the headphones SUCK, but the player is sooooo cool!!!! then the honeymoon ended.

my memory showed up from dell and i was all set to fill it up with songs. fired up the NAM (Nike Audio Manager) and... it crashed. fired it up again and this time it stayed up. but the amount of memory it was showing that i had free was wrong, plus i could only access "internal" memory. so i hit refresh and BOOM it crashed. so i thought, well, there's prolly a firmware update, better do that. i couldnt get it to work at ALL at home (WinXP Pro). tried it again at work and had no problems even though i use the same OS at work. the battery indicator showed up on the little remote (even though i NEVER use it) but NAM kept crashing whenever the MMC was inserted. i emailed tech support numerous times (6 times total now, and i havent received one response from them yet) to try and get some help with it. also, the player itself wouldnt even turn on if the MMC was inserted. if i took it out, put it back in, flipped the power switch to on and then off and then on again, i could get it to power on, but it said "NO TRACKS" even though i knew i had several on there (both in internal memory and on the card). after i took out the MMC card, ALL my songs that had been in the internal memory were now gone. so i said screw it and took it back to CC and got another one.

the second wasnt any better. STILL wouldnt recognize the MMC memory nor would it work properly when the MMC was inserted. plus NAM was crashing ALL the time. i flashed the firmware.... no improvements. i uninstalled NAM and switched to the non-nike version, with no improvements. so i decided to do a little research and found that some 75% of all the psa[plays shipped can not read MMC memory. the only brand that has had any measurable sucess is Sandisk. plus, a large portition of the players were/are having other troubles as well (batteries not fitting properly, remote fails to work after a couple of uses, etc.). so i packed it up, grabbed my MMC and Zio! reader and headed back to CC. i (politely) talked to the manager of the store and explained what was happening (he was there when i switched out the first one and remembered me). he agreed to switch me out to a third player and i got him to agree to test out the player before i left. good move on my part because he couldnt even get it to power on WITHOUT the MMC card. at first he thought it was a dead battery but after fiddling with it for a few minutes, he finally got it to power up. but, as i had experieced, he couldnt get it to do anything once he put my MMC memory in (by the way, i tested the MMC thoroughly to make sure it wasnt the memory before i even thought of taking the player back). i explained to him that i had tried multiple times to get ahold of tech support but never with any luck. so, after a little more discussion, he agreed to upgrade me to the psa[play 120 for a small fee. that way, even if it doesnt read my card, i'll have 64megs to use, instead of the scant 32. they were out of stock so they had to special order it (still dont have it yet).

i'm sure some of you are scratching your heads going "you've just bitched and moaned about how this player sucks so bad, why the heck did you get another one, even if it has more memory???" cuz i'm totally in love with it. i've looked at all the other players out there and i cant find one that i like as much (compaq ipaq mp3 player is the only other one i'd even consider). nothing comes close to it in size and portability or looks.

hopefully nike will force diamond to beef up on the tech support. out of all the psa owners that i've spoken to, the only ones who have been able to get through to tech support had to call them and experieced EXTREMELY long hold times (30-50 minutes). then, after getting through, were told that they are aware of the various problems and are working on a "fix". i think i'll buy the CC extended warranty so i wont have to deal with diamond support. if Rio/nike does get the psa[play working properly, this will be a killer player. if not... well, i guess i can listen to the same 60+ minutes over and over again during a workout

i hope this gives some of you some insight into what you're getting yourself into with this player. if you're happy with 32megs, then this is a killer deal for this player. if you're wanting one with a bit more memory, either buy sandisk or keep taking the player back to where you bought it until you find one that can actually work with an MMC (just make sure to be nice and courteous to the CSR... they'll be willing to do a lot more for you if you're not yelling at them )

i havent been able to find a good newsgroup or webboard dedicated to this player, so if any of you know one, please pm me or post in here. or if anyone hears of a firmware update to fix the MMC problem, let me know

and last, if you're thinking about using WMA files, check out EasyWMA Convertor. it allows you to right-click an mp3 file and re-encode it to WMA and to do batch encoding. i know you can get a free WMA encoder from microsoft, but this makes transfering your mp3's over REALLY easy.

this is too funny... i just now got an email from tech support responding to my email to them about the NAM closing itself out.

Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for contacting Diamond Legacy.
According to the following site this product is not XP compatible. You can
try the following though. I would suggest you check the Microsoft
Hardware Compatibility list (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) You may also want to try Music Match. If you have further questions please feel free to contact us.

now, if you actually go to microsofts HCL and look up the category "Portable Music Players," the Nike Psa[Play is the VERY first one listed AND its XP compatible. rofl!!!! :Q

i'm beginning to wonder if that's their canned response: "it's the operating system's fault!"

Maybe this is splitting hairs but the HCL list the psa[play 120 as compatible -- not the 60. In fact the psa[play 60 is not listed at all.

yeah, i thought about that too. even though the specs are identical for the 60 and 120 (only real difference is the amount of onboard memory) it IS conceivable that the drivers could be different. so i did a little more searching and found both the 60 and 120 listed on windowsmedia.com as being XP compatible. click here to check it out

either way, i've decided to get the extended warranty from circuit city so that i dont have to worry about dealing with diamond's (lack of) tech support.

Wait! It says 9.95 on their site! What's up?

Does anyone have a link for the arm band? I can't find it on the website.

Thanks.

I never ordered it b/c I doubt it'll fit my 16'' pythons but it looks like they pulled it from the site so they could whack you for $10 more bucks for phone orders. Not a surprise since there was a huge increase in demand for these things between the BB and Frye's deals. Maybe try Egay?

Thanks chizow!

BTW: I'm still trying to understand the thinking behind the remote unit. Other than displaying track data and duplicating (most of) the main unit functions, what is its purpose? It seems to just add additional wiring to the situation -- especially if an arm band is used. I notice it has a clip on it too. Where are you supposed to clip it?

I'm just confused about it in general.

Update: Fry's L.A. advertised this for $77.95 just the other day (which I assume is good through Tuesday).

Whether they still have stock is beyond me. I didn't buy one when I saw it at $79.95 last week because MMC expansion is too costly.

The remote is definitely there for cosmetic purposes over utility. Other mp3 players integrate an AM/FM tuner into the remote for greater functionality. If you use the PSA play for working out or any other activity where you're lightly dressed, you'll probably want to skip the remote. Its good for instances in public places where you are wearing a jacket or layers. You can stash away the PSA play main unit in a coat pocket, pants, or a backpack/purse, and only have the remote unit inconspicuously showing from a jacket lapel, backpack/computer bag strap, or shirt pocket. I don't use the remote when I'm at the gym, its just too much extra bulk. It also drains the battery faster, but its just another head-turning gadget, which is always a good thing

As for the Fry's deal, its still a good one if they have the $50 MIR. $30 for a 32meg stylish and functional mp3 player is still excellent IMO. Yeah the MMC format is kind of a dead-end, but I can't think of anything better for working out. This player is slim, durable (compared to other designs), and costing only $30, not a total tragedy if it happens to be damaged or broken in the process of physical activity. I bought a Techno Yepp 128MB for the times I would need an mp3 player other than the gym, and depending on how it works out, I may end up selling this PSA play to my roommate as it is all he would ever want/need in an mp3 player.

just some general info and some questions:

i've been using winamp to output to wma with great success. i think it sounds better than the microsoft offerings..but that's just my opinion.

now....has anyone purchased an mmc card and had it work? i'd love to bump this thing up to 96 megs. that would give me enough room for about 3-4 full albums. also....what brand of mmc seems to be working?

thanks for the heads up on this player. i haven't purchased such a cool toy in a long time!

dirty.
