<< and last, if you're thinking about using WMA files, check out EasyWMA Convertor. it allows you to right-click an mp3 file and re-encode it to WMA and to do batch encoding. i know you can get a free WMA encoder from microsoft, but this makes transfering your mp3's over REALLY easy. >>

Audio Converter, which is bundled in the Windows Media Player Bonus Pack from Microsoft, does the same thing and is FREE. The one you listed is $15. I posted this earlier but to make sure people don't waste money on things they dont need I'll link it again.

<< Microsoft Media Player Download Center

There are two apps that will do this. Windows Media Encoder 7.0 or Audio Converter 3.0. I couldnt link the actual app so use the dropdown to grab the app you want.

Audio Converter 3.0 is part of the Windows Media Player Bonus Pack
-This one offers Audio Converter 3.0 (limited edition) which works great for batch conversions

Windows Media Encoder 7.0
-This does only one at a time, but you can be more specific on quality and it also does video.

<< just some general info and some questions:

i've been using winamp to output to wma with great success. i think it sounds better than the microsoft offerings..but that's just my opinion.

now....has anyone purchased an mmc card and had it work? i'd love to bump this thing up to 96 megs. that would give me enough room for about 3-4 full albums. also....what brand of mmc seems to be working?

thanks for the heads up on this player. i haven't purchased such a cool toy in a long time!

dirty.
>>

hhhmmm.... i hadnt thought about using winamp to convert files into WMA. might have to try that. is there already a plugin for winamp to convert to WMA?

as for MMC, the only brand that has had any sucess has been Sandisk. so if you're going to buy some and you want at least a fighting chance of getting it to work, go with Sandisk. they are more expensive, but you can pick up 64megs for $48 and change at buy.com.

i only mentioned the other (EasyWMA) because Audio Convertor doesnt work on any of XP machines i've tried it on. each time i try to use it from a right-click menu in Windows Explorer, it crashes explorer.exe. i've been using Windows Media Player to copy and encode and then upload to my player, but only for new mp3s. on all those that i've already encoded into mp3, EasyWMA makes it easy to convert and it has worked flawlessly. if Audio Convertor works, then by all means, use it. cant beat free! but if it isnt working for others of you, try out EasyWMA.

i'm off to pick up the psa[play 120. i'll let you know if i have any better luck with it!

OK... i've been searching around the web and behold... i've found the site that address to the MMC problem.

In the SONICblue site in japan <here> it states which MMC cards have success in running MMC.

Jap 101 only taught us so much... so i don't really understand much but it seems like MMCs baring the ID: AB0108KQ, and AB0005HE works

the ones that failed are: HB288064MN1 , and variations of A3101D00002

Apparently SanDisk are from the AB batches and should work... while other brands such as Mr. Flash and such uses the A310....

this article written on 11/22/01 so i suppose there wouldn't be a firmware update anytime soon...

wow! good work kweepa!!! /me high-fives kweepa

now, can anyone read japanese and explain what all this says??

the only thing, IMO, that really holds this player back from being one of the best mp3 player out there, is this MMC problem. i've read on numerous sites that a firmware update could easily fix this problem. i wonder how come rio/diamond/sonicblue are holding back on this fix??

yah I agree tenest, wish this thing used smart media instead. I think its an awesome player for $30, but this whole portable mp3 thing has whet my appetite for more and better......so I went ahead and bought the Samsung Techno Yepp 128 MB. More features, Smart Media, and 4x as much room (no WMA though). SmartMedia will be nice though, its cheaper and I can use it for my other toys as well. PSA 60 is going to my roomie.

ok heres a translation of the japanese on the sonic blue webpage. there really isnt too much useful information on there actually.

the top two boxes tell you that sandisk 64MBs are ok.
the next box says that 64MBs from IOData Corporation wont work.
fourth box - 64MB cards from Dynamic Neikido (no clue?) will work as long as it has is the MMC-6401 model
fifth - 64MB cards from Dynamic Neikido (no clue?) wont work if its the MMC-6403 model or the
sixth - the 64MB card from Novac (sp) wont work
seventh - 64MB card from Hagiwara Ciscom (no clue?) wont work

i think 5-7 are japan only memory cards/companies
the * is basically a disclaimer saying this is what they have found to work and not work, your mileage may vary, they make no gaurantees

and the stuff at the bottom is how they tested the different disks

hope that helps. ive studied japanese for a couple years but i had altavista help me with some of it. in the future if you need something translated go to http://world.altavista.com/tr

FYI. For those of you who are looking for the arm band for this unit, I just got notice that mine shipped from Sonicblue (see link in chizow's message above). I ordered this two days ago even though the web site said it was on backorder at the time. Price was $13.90 shipped ($9.95 plus $3.95 shipping).

Hope you guys are reporting the problem to them. If enough people make noise they may finally get around to fixing it:

Cool, glad they are available now.

I'm passing on the MMC ($60 shipped for 64MB is a bit too much) and the armband for now. I'm expecting my Samsung Techno Yepp 128MB tomorrow from Amazon ($135 after MIR) so I'm gonna see how it does at the gym. I read in a few sites that the Techno Yepp really sucks down batteries, and its a bit heavier than the PSA play, so I may use the PSA for the gym and the Yepp for everything else.

As for headphones, I ended up picking up a pair of $10 Sony over-the-ear buds. Sound is nothing fantastic, maybe slightly better than the PSA stock phones. The Sony's are much more comfortable however and they won't interfere at all during workouts, particularly for those who also work with free weights where your head is resting against a pad. I didn't get the over-the-ear foam padded ones that cover your ears b/c they looked kinda cumbersome, especially if you run/sweat or use free weights where any contact might dislodge them.

dont expect an actual response from diamond legacy tech support for at least a couple of weeks. out of the 6 emails i have sent them (diamond legacy support, not diamond support) i have received one email response (of which was wrong.... he said that XP doesnt support the nike psa[play yet i have found several spots on microsofts website stating that XP does support the psa[play, both the 120 AND the 60) and no follow-ups.

so i would like to change my original statement to:

the only thing holding this player back from being one of the best out there is the MMC problem and the LACK of customer/technical support. :disgust:

ok guys, I just got my Nike player, and when I plugged it into my USB port, it was detected and installed without any problem by Windows XP Pro. But I can't figure out how you delete and add music to it under windows media player! I am in "Copy to CD or Device" tab, and yes it does show the device, but it shows it's 23MB free (with Papa Roach's Last Resort on there already). But when I try to copy my MP3s over to the device by first placing them in the playlist on the left and then clicking the red "Copy Music" button on the top right, it simply says "an error has occured".

What do I do? Thanks in advance!!!!!!!

by the way, I have Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro (the one with speed racer buttons hehe) on my desktop, and nothing else. Marble trackball is PS/2. I've tried everything, it seems like on the desktop, WMP 8 sees how much memory is used/left, but not the songs ("no media listed" instead of a list of the songs on there, even though it says "0 bytes/32MB 164KB free"). What could be causing this?

there is one software difference, my desktop has Plus! for XP installed, while my laptop doesn't. But that should affect anything tho...

woo-hoo!!!! just got this in my inbox

<< As for your second request, there is actually an issue with these players recognizing the external memory. This has to do with the firmware, which the player came with. We have an updated version of the firmware for download on our ftp site. This update addresses the issue you are having, and should enable the player to recognize any of the accepted sizes of external memory. I have pasted the link for this download below.
