I was looking at 5 megapixel cams and decided on the Minolta dimage 7. Considered the Nikon but didn't like the proprietary battery. On the other hand, the dimage is a friggin' swine when it comes to battery consumption. High-capacity nimh cells make it liveable (barely) but it does take sweet pix...

True. My Dimage 7 is a battery pig...I rotate 4 sets of 1800MaH NiMH batteries for it, and that is sufficient.

I gotta look awefully close and hard to see jaggies, which incidentally are not caused by the camera, but by the jpeg compression. One great thing about the G2 is the uncompressed RAW mode, which avoids the pitfalls of jpg artifacting. Show me a similar photo from any camera and you will see jaggies if there is jpeg compression. Even present here you have to study this photo pretty well to see them. Such as this pic with a Sony 707 http://www.something-fishy.com/photography/life/inthewind.php Jaggies are there, not significant, and probably do not exist if taken in an uncompressed format.

The Dimage 7 has some problems which I'm not going to get into. It is still a very good camera, although I do not like the construction or feel of it. You can go round and round in the digital camera debate. Most people will argue and defend their camera to the end. I guess people do not want to think they might have done better buying something else? I just got my G2 after many hours of research, gallery viewing and eliminating cameras that didn't match the specs and features I wanted. It basically comes down to the Sony 707 and Canon G2. Once you get down to those 2 you can decide based on the features you like. I compared pictures between the 2 until I was blue in the face. One looks better here, another there.. I have to say I would be very satisfied with either, as would most people. The 5000 has problems that should not exist in a camera that costs as much as it does. Even some of the Nikon diehards are disappointed. Anyway if you are serious about getting a digital camera visit

I had already spent my money on a SOny DSC-S75 (nice camera) but really wish I had waited for the G2. I don't particularly like all the in-camera sharpening the canon's do (that is why they seem to produce more jaggies than many other brands).

Sampes of what my s75 can do...

I do like the flip-out LCD (excellent for capturing candids) and the remote features. 4mp is nice too.

Anyone know anything about the Olympus E-10 compared to the Nikon-5000 or the Cannon G2?

"I was looking at 5 megapixel cams and decided on the Minolta dimage 7. Considered the Nikon but didn't like the proprietary battery."

I think I would be more concerned with the proprietary non-RGB color space on the Dimage 7.

<< The 995 friggin eats batteries >>

I do not agree.
990 might be bad for that, 995 already fixed that problem

Besides, it takes both rechargable and non-rechargable batteries.

I still love my 995.
>>

i dont agree with ya... 990's take standard AA batteries which are now as high as 1900 mA. i can shoot 100-125 pics with the flash no prob. with the 995, youre stuck with the en-el rechargable battery.

I haven't seen anything over 1800mah. Who makes 1900? Nexcell?

5000 or G2, 5000 is a next gen for Nikon..

<< Just curious as to what people think here...

Which camera is better:

Nikon Coolpix 995, Canon G2, or Nikon 5000?

Thanks for the input!

dpreview.com will post a review of Coolpix 5000 next week.. I cant wait for a thorough review..
And of course, in 6 months DP5000 will be around $400-$500.. Then is would be wise to pick it up.. Right now it is way to expensive..
G2 is great, but G3 will be 5 megapixel (aka Coolpix 5000)..
Right now, my vote would go to coolpix 5000 if u have extra funds..

I know Royal Camera already changed their price, buy just wondering...why would you buy it from Dell for $739 after price match when it was $565 from Royal? That's not logical Spock!

Pretty amazing pics thinlizzie. I had no idea that DC's were capable of such high level macro photography. Judging by the exceptional depth of field, these must have been tripod-remote exposures in the 1/10sec range. Looks like about a 2:1 macro on some of those - I can't imagine you were able to sneak within a few inches of those bugs (especially that fly). Did you use an accessory tele lens and/or crop the photos?

The deciding factor for me between the g2 and the nikon 5000 was the RAW file ability. Imagine getting a 64mb CF card and shooting full size images. If shooting tifs on either of these cameras they will likely take up about 20mb (maybe a little less). This means 3 images on this 64mb card. Now the G2 shoots in a RAW version. This is just as good as a tif once the computer does the RGB formula rather than the camera. Now these RAW files take up about 7mb, thats roughly 9 images on that same card. Now imagine how much space you save on a 512 mb card or microdrive. Also the RAW files don't take as long to save onto the card because of the size and that the camera isn't giving the RGB values. Why nikon didn't put this option on the 5000 is beyond me, it is on there slr D models.

The REALLY nice features of both the CP5000 and Dimage 7 is their 28mm, that's INVALUABLE if you're serious about photography.
I've got the Dimage 7 and use ColorFix ($17) for batch conversion to sRGB, after trying like 20 cameras, this is probably the best you can get for your money at this point in time, the 28-200mm lens is absolutely fabulous. Only problem (same for all 5mp CCD's) is the noise, but it's not noticeable under 20x30 and there are ways to fix it.
The only possible upgrade is the Canon D30 SLR but that's $2.5k with a good lens.

The CP5000 is much more compact, but probably not compact enough where you'd have it with you all the time like the Option 330 for instance. I can't really think of stuations where you'd be able to carry the CP5000 and not the D7.

Hey worms...

This is going to be hard to believe but all those pics were handheld. You just need incredible patience (and a place with lots of food plants they like). I took all of those just last summer. (That was with just the stock camera, no add-on lenses, manual focus set to the closest possible distance (.1meter) in aperture priority (I do as much manaully as possible so the camera's "think" time is minimized. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I had the "perfect shot" only to see an empty flower after the fact. Also for each one you see in the gallery there are probably on average 8 to 10 duds I deleted of the same subject. Lots of thornbushes and mosquito bites too!

Actually I think the DOF is awful compared to my film camera (I think b/c the CCD is smaller in surface area than a frame of 35mm film).

Thanks for the compliment too!

Thinlizzie
