only adds $5 more to the price so it shouldn't really effect anyone's decision if they were gonna do the original deal.

Just curious as to what people think here...

Which camera is better:

Nikon Coolpix 995, Canon G2, or Nikon 5000?

Thanks for the input!

The 995 friggin eats batteries...I'd much rather pick the G2. Canon makes great cameras.

The G2 is the best consumer level camera available for the money right now. The Sony 707 would be the other camera to consider, but it's bulky size along with proprietary memory cards and blown colors turned me away. It is a very fine camera though, it just didn't fit what I was looking for. The problem with the G2 is that it is sold out most everywhere (reputable). Check out this guys gallery for some simple G2 example pics . The G2's battery really lasts for ever. I can't believe it. I use it with the LCD on most of the time and it just lasts and lasts. The swiveling LCD screen is great too. I'm not an expert but I researched all these cameras to death before deciding on the G2, and I haven't been disappointed.

I recommend Digital Photography Review if you want really good info on digicams.

I do not agree.
990 might be bad for that, 995 already fixed that problem

Besides, it takes both rechargable and non-rechargable batteries.

I still love my 995.

For the most part, they are good. But this one has some very noticeable 'jaggies' on the curves, and the bird poop decorating Mickey's shoes in this one is rather repulsive :Q

For what it's worth, of the 20 or so digital cameras that I have used, I like the Sony DSC-F707 best. Excellent picture quality; outstanding color in flash pictures, great lens, nightshot/nightframing/laser focusing, very long battery life. Other than its usage of Memory Sticks, there is not much to complain about with that camera.

Oh, and I had no issues with the batteries in the Nikon 995 either; it's OK...not the greatest camera though.

In the dpreview review of the G2, there was a color/contrast/sharpness comparison at the end with some other cameras (Sony 8xx?, Nikon 995, Olympus 4040z). It looked like the G2 had the 2nd worst color purity while the Sony came out way way ahead in that, but really they were all very good. G2 had really good sharpness. They couldn't compare the Nikon 5k, but it's likely to have similar color purity to the 995, which to my eye came in 2nd. Plus, the 5k is 5MP and the G2 is 4MP. It really just comes down to what manual features you want and how easy it is to get to them. The 5k is smaller and lighter than the G2, BTW, and its batteries will probably last about an hour less. If you're a professional, the G2 has this cool mode where all the camera's features are available remotely (connect it to your laptop via USB), don't know about the 5k. Both the G2 and the 5k have external flash hotshoes so you aren't limited by the built-in flashes, don't know about the others. The 5k & G2 both have 3x optical zoom but I think the 4040z has a 4x optical zoom. You'll be happy with any of the higher megapixel Sonys, Nikons, Canons, or Olympuses. This is a nice deal, thanks for posting!

The "jaggies" referred to above are aliasing artifacts, right?

I just borrowed a Sony 550V for taking some pictures for an e-commerce website, and came across that
problem while trying to capture the front of a computer case. If the camera was not perfectly level and
centered with the target, around the gaps of the drive trays I got bad "jaggies".
Is this normal for digital camera's or am I doing something wrong?
I guess as you go higher in pixel count they reduce in size? (Sony used was 3.3 MP)
Kind of makes me sorry I sold my Hasselblad.

The jaggies in that elephant picture are caused by the picture being reduced in size. View the picture at original size and jaggies are gone.

The Sony is a great camera. It just didn't fulfill my needs when I compared all of the features. It does take very nice pictures. By the way Bit (message below this one) the Sony 707 has a 5x zoom.

Sony DSC-F707 is the best IMHO. 5MP, night-shot, 6X optical zoom, and really very good picture quality.

as to the memory stick, Buy.com has the Lexar MEMORY STICK 128MB for only $60.95 -$15 rebate = $45.95, valid through 1/31. 64MB for only $32.95.

I own both Cannon G2 and Nikon 995. I compaired them. I think the photo quality of 995 is a little better than that of g2, although 995 is just a 3M pix DC. But the construction of G2 is better than 995, and I think Nikon takes some ideas from g2 in making nikon5000. And of course G2's battery last much longer than 995's. But 995's battery is not that bad coz' I took 200+ photos in Death Valley before the battery ran out completely.

I am looking at the original here and the jaggies are very noticeable...take a look at the signpost under the "D" in Disney, and the letters L and K on the bottom. Still there.
