Nikon Lenses for D40 UPDATE

I was looking at a couple of lenses on Nation Camera Exchanges website. I only have auto focus with AFS and AFI lenses, since I don't have a motor in my camera body. So, I found some cheap 70-210 lenses (Tokina) but I don't know if they will work or not.

One is NIKON/TOKINA 70-210 AIS E+
NIKON/TAMRON 75-300 LD E+
NIKON SIGMA 7O-300 AF E+
NIKON QUANTARAY 70-300MM AF E

Can anyone tell me if what lines from each of these guys will support autofocus with my camera? i.e. Tokina AIS will support it, Tamron LD will not etc (previous is made up).

Are there better places to find lenses? Are these second hand brands ok for a newbie?


Just read some more reviews. I'm looking at four lenses now. Nikon 18-200 VR (750) and a Nikon 70-300 VR (500), Nikon 55-200 VR (175), Nikon 24-120 VR. I'm thinking either just the 18-200 or 70-300, but a 55-200 VR is coming out in 2 days!!! Thoughts?

those type of lenses will autofocus on D40. i don't think any other brand has an AF-S equivalent besides Sigma

oh btw Nikon just announced a new 55-200 AF-S VR. it looks like you're looking for that zoom range, so you might wanna wait for that

Swai, is the HSM line completely compatible with the AF-S D40 body?

The Sigma and Tamron are the ones I'm looking at, they are both in the 100ish range. Do you think no autofocus is a deal breaker? I'm a camera n00b, so I know I want something with a fair bit of zoom, but would you normally use autofocus at that type of range.

Sigma HSM lenses still autofocus on the D40? I thought the D40 only autofocused with Nikkor lenses...what about non-HSM Sigma lenses?

The HSM selection on the website is quite limited however. Do they have others that are not on there or is HSM a pretty new line?

HSM stands for hyper sonic motor, which uses electronic signals to focus rather than a mechanical screw drive (which the D40 lacks, therefore can't focus those lenses)

so yes, HSM lenses will autofocus on D40, non-HSM lenses won't (in Sigma's line of lenses). here's a list of HSM lenses:

the 18-200 VR is in short supply.. too much demand and too little supply. so you'll probably have to be waitlisted to get one. but its supposedly a killer deal at $750

the 55-200 VR looks very nice at $250 (thats the price Nikon suggests). it looks like they released this lens specifically to provide a low cost complement to the 18-55 kit lens. of course its not out yet, but it will probably be the least expensive option and it has VR

i think those would be the best options.. one on the more expensive end and one on the less expensive end. of course it depends on what you're looking for specifically (ie. do you mind not having a the wider end on the 55-200? i'm assuming you have the kit lens to cover the 18-55 range)
