ISO performance, noise, video, blah blah blah... bodies are computers. They get better and better every year due to Moore's Law. Nikon and Canon are the same as Nvidia and ATI, one-upping each other all the time. Neither will stay the winner very long when it comes to bodies. Don't be foolish and make your whole decision based on who happens to have the upper hand at the moment for the bodies at your price level.

Glass is another matter. Canon and Nikon are pretty evenly matched here. In general, Canon has more choices and better prices, while Nikon has better quality at greater expense. For example, look at the basic threesome of professional f/2.8 zooms: wide-angle, normal, and telephoto. I think most people would agree that Nikon wins the image quality battle on all 3 fronts: the Nikon 14-24 is amazing and the much more limited Canon 16-35 can't compare; the 24-70 from Nikon is better than the Canon 24-70; and the 70-200 VR is better than the 70-200 IS (although I have yet to see good comparisons with the new Canon 70-200 IS II). However, Canon offers a lower-level set of zooms in the same ranges at f/4, each of which is considerably cheaper than the f/2.8 versions: the 17-40, 24-105, and 70-200. So there it is in a nutshell. Nikon lenses provide better quality, but Canon gives you double the options (and at lower price points). Part of this is because Nikon updates its lenses quite often. Canon will rarely update a lens more than once every 5 years, and there are many current Canon lenses that have not seen updates in 15 years or longer. Nikon, on the other hand, will update a lens whenever it thinks it can use the update.

If I were in your shoes, I would go with a used, older body and some better glass. Personally, I cannot recommend anything in Canon's Rebel line unless you really want video at the lowest price possible. The build quality and the ergonomics are just not there. Go for something in the XXD line. Similarly, I would not recommend the Nikon DX000 line, nor the D40/D60/etc. D70 and up are fine, but ideally you'd be looking at a D200 or D300. I recommend you shop used, previous generation, and higher model line.

I'd like to say the Canon 70-200 f2.8 II wins the battle. So Nikon takes 2/3. The 24-70 is in bad need of updating and I'm sure Canon is working on that. The 16-35 isn't bad at all, although the Nikon UWA is just amazing. So I'd say the 24-70 is the real optically lacking lens.

Also, not everyone wants to drop $2500 on a 70-200, so Canon offers you 5 white lenses now. The cheapest 70-200 starts at $600, and 5x70-200s is not what Nikon will offer you. While I'd dream of a 70-200 II, I see myself jumping through the F4 IS or the cheaper non IS maybe before finally getting to the top notch model.

Ahh the age old debate. My brother has a Canon Rebel, which I have shot with before, and I liked it quite a bit. Now, I'm not a well versed photographer but I found it to be very user friendly and took some great photos but my the photographers I know always say the lens is the most important part...so I'd say invest in the best lens you can.

Disclaimer: I'm a Nikon shooter.

Lenses are at parity between Canon and Nikon. Both companies make lenses that their competitor's users drool over. Both companies' pro lenses are, well, pro lenses and are suitably amazing. As a Nikon shooter who is very familiar with Nikon's lens lineup, I can tell you that there are some gaps that haven't been filled in a decade.

Historically, Nikon had better exposure metering and a lightyears-better flash system, while Canon had better autofocus. I would say that autofocus is at parity between the two manufacturers now at all price points. Canon's flash system is catching up to Nikon's but not quite there yet. I don't have enough experience with Canon exposure metering to compare it against Nikon's.

The biggest differentiator between the performance of Nikon gear and Canon gear is the organic viewfinder accessory: you. The camera will not take good pictures on its own. You have to know what the automatic features (autoexposure, flash autoexposure, autofocus) of the camera are doing to get them to do what you want. They are just means to an end after all. Lots of people, especially on the internet, forget that all the gadgetry is just tools, not the objective.

Used 5D + 24-105 f/4 L. Higher than the OP's budget, but a good all-rounder which probably suits the OPs type of photography, and avoids the conflicts with crop format: High quality lenses which have a focal length better suited to full frame, or investing in crop format lenses which are not forwards compatible.

when he said for mainstream products im pretty sure he meant consumer level

I know I am just that excited over how good the D3S is. I own Pentax glass so I will have to wait for them to get this technology once it is in consumer products. I cannot afford prosumer products.

might be a while, Pentax doesn't seem to be moving as quickly. Sad too, as I was very tempted to switch to a K7. I loved it when I picked it up... but it was lacking too much in the high ISO department. That and I didn't want to switch systems, I have too much vested in canon, so just gotta wait for them to stop sitting on their asses, heh.

Good thing you did not buy a K7, nice camera but Pentax is working on a medium format camera and that means all new lenses.

The MF camera Pentax has been working on is years overdue (well, sorta). And it certainly is a completely different market from their SLR group. The K-x proved to have some pretty good high ISO relative to it's slightly older brother, the K-7. So there's hope the K-7 replacement will be pretty good.

It's just a matter of when. Pentax rumor mills are always floating with their demise. It would be a damn shame if it ever came through because I'm vying for Canon to follow what the K-7 has done, compact rugged little go getter. Hoya just doesn't seem confident with Pentax =(

I guess Hoya would be more confident if they could turn a profit. I will still with Pentax right now because I have invested in their glass but lets face it for the most part if a maker comes out with a new feature the rest have it too and they are not differentiated that much. Maybe if Pentax does stop making cameras they can continue to make great fixed lenses. I love my f1.4 50mm.
