Nikon .. well, it doesn't drop a bomb. But it's still looking good.

Ughh... Bad reminder that I learned all of Canon and Sony's line-ups but almost nothing in Nikon's.

Awesome they actually put a good viewfinder on that thing. That looks better than the D610 viewfinder.

10fps shooting and 4k video......

Because amazing images can happen even when the sun goes down, the D500 is capable of excellent low-light performance, with an ISO range of 100-51,200, expandable to 50-1,640,000 equivalent. From low-light cityscapes to action sports under the lights, the D500 is ready to tackle any imaging challenge.

Incredible max ISO!!!!

I'm excited - I'm curious what sensor they've gone with, have they bought Samsung sensors.

But.. the real bomb will hit ( and, now, not likely until next year ) when they announce their mirrorless f-mount body.

OK, let me back up.

This is the biggest news:

An AF module developed for full-frame means unprecedented frame coverage on the APS-C D500, in this case with cross-type sensors available out to the literal edges of the frame. Furthermore, Nikon is introducing Auto AF Fine-Tune, which appears to use Live View (focus at the image plane) to automatically calibrate (at least the center point of) the Phase Detect AF module for any given lens 'with a few button operations'. This should help address arguably one of the biggest shortcomings of DSLRs relative to mirrorless cameras: the fact that the AF module is only a proxy for focus and, therefore, prone to inaccuracy.

love it! This is only going to get Canon off their asses and put out an awesome successor to the 5Dmk3, right? RIGHT?!

impressive! How does the AF compare to Canon's flagship, the 1Dx? (dunno anything about the 1Dx)

"Autofocus

If I had to pick just one feature of the D500 that stands out, I would have to pick the new AF module. Honestly, when I read the technical specs of the camera, I thought there must have been a mistake. 153 autofocus points? 99 cross-type sensors? 55 user-selectable points? We’ve never seen an AF system like this in a DSLR. And it’s awesome."

Just wait till the 6d2 comes out and has all 9 focus points cross type. Then you'll be glad that you stayed with Canon.

Competition is good... Nikon has been sleeping and the 7DMk2 now has a true competitor.

Good lord the buffer on the Nikon... Whee !

Yum. Hope they get rid of the GPS and use a full magnesium body.

Was just looking at the D5 over at dpreview. It's like a milk crate with a lens.

Looking at the new Canon 1DX Mark II, I'm downgrading my review of the Nikon to a crate of skim milk; Canon brings the crate of whole milk with 100g more camera in every camera.

Both look like beastly machines that should serve well but at 3+ lbs plus lens, damn.

Both of them do look a bit... um .. ugly.

But I'm guessing anybody who lays hands on either will be pretty oblivious to the looks of it...

Looks and weight are the last things on a professional's mind when they have a huge 800mm prime lens with a monopod stuck to the things.

I've always loved the looks of these cameras, and the handling is pretty damn nice, but definitely heavy (I've owned a D1X and D2H, for reference).

I agree. The handling is great. I had a D2H and D3. Sold them because they were just too heavy.

they are really no different then the previous "pro" cameras, all the way back to the F5 film camera

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! When I really started playing around with photography, I really wanted an F5. Closest I got was an F100 before I jumped to digital.

Regarding the D500 ... now only if no dust issues arise, or if they do Nikon doesn't take the first response in deny first, wait until China bans, and then admits awareness of an issue.

I am not a Nikon camera hater. I started using Nikon cameras in ~1985. Only when the D600 fiasco hit and how the company mishandled the problem did I walk away and buy a Canon. At the time of the D600/610 I was actually considering a D800e, but instead went with a 5DmkIII.

And while I have not picked up any of my older Nikon DSLR bodies (non-FF, EOL, disposable) I kept a very nice lens that does pretty damn good macro, which I have not yet found an equivalent in Canon. Maybe this is me thinking one day I might return to the Nikon fold. I'm such a polygamous.
