ds, more bang for buck.
psp not so good of a value
if u want videos, just get a philips pet724/824 portable dvd player or soetmhing. 150 bucks for 7" screen thats clearer/better contrast than any in its price range, some out there really look fuzzy/muddy. 199bucks for the 8.5". plus it does divx. 4hr battery life for 7" 6 hour battery life for 8.5" player. no point buying an expensive psp hd or whatever compared to that. even comes with car adaptor

I say DS Lite. The biggest reason I purchased it is for the fun/innovative games and BATTERY LIFE. Try to watch a complete movie on the PSP running on battery. DS Lite with homebrew so you can watch Divx, play MP3's and Emulators = teh w1n.

DS. Just played two rounds of Mario Kart over the internet with a friend last night.

My vote would be the DS Lite. I just picked one up last night using some bday gift cards. I can't put this thing down. My first handheld system was the original GameBoy. They are have come a loooong way. Just how far backwards compatable is the DS Lite? Sounds like it is just GBA and DS games?

I've played with my buddies PSP and wasn't really impressed by it, but I saw the DS Lite with the new Mario game and now I want one so damn bad!

Yeah, just GBA and DS games.

I agree with those that say DS Lite. I have DS and PSP. The PSP began a paper weight after a couple months. I still play my DS daily. I have the original DS, but the DS Lite is much better.

DS has a lot of great games, but PSP has more games + more potential.

How do you figure it's got more potential?

I own both systems and PSP definitely has more potential at this point. PSP games are mediocre, and there is a lot of room for improvement. FFVII Crisis Core, new Rockstar games, new Devils May Cry, and more.

DS has the edge in fun factor, but it is so cool to have GTA in your pocket with PSP.

Thanks for the replies. I'm a fan of sport games, but I know that EA isn't supported with Nintendo brand. Might be a selling point for me.

I have a PSP. It's great if you want to watch videos on it. I brought it on a cross country flight and watched prison break all the way there. The built in browser on it is a joke though. It's slow as all hell and many pages dont load due to not enough memory.

The games are ok I guess, there are a few here and there that I like. I've been working on Field Commander. I just beat Syphon Filter. Lumines is a lotta fun. I'm waiting for the FF7 game to come out.

Dont have a DS Lite, but I've played with it and I plan to get one when the FF3 remake comes out. I'd probably pick up Advance wars and Zelda as well.

If you're not gonna be watching movies/videos, I'd recommend you get a DS Lite.

I just had an amazing online match in MKDS, against someone from Sweden, Japan, and one other that I'm not sure of. Every race came down to the wire and it was a four-way tie in the point standings at the end. Then we all did another GP with the same 4-way tie result.
MKDS online > *
DS

Do you have the Fire Emblem game for the gamecube?

i've only used the psp for a little while when it first came out.. i just got a ds lite and i freakin play it all the time.. you can also do a hardware flash that lets you play emulated games.. read the thread (search homebrew) to figure out what it does..

edit: oh, by the way, i also travel a lot, and i have a laptop, but the ds lite is great for the plane rides, or when you're in an airport and don't want to pull out your laptop... to me it seemed that the psp was really heavy and bulky in my hands when i tried it, but again, i only played with it for like a day

Since I want to give an honest opinion:

The DS is better if you're playing games alone.
The PSP is better if you have friends who can play games with you.

The reason why PSP collects dust for many people is because outside of all the little things it can do, the games for the system are mainly multiplayer.

Best way I can describe the PSP is like a MMO. Sucks alone, fun with others. The DS on the other hand is a more single player device.

Any argument that the PSP's games are not entirely multiplayer focused are mOOt. They're entirely multiplayer focused. The only single player games that are worth a damn on the system are ports of older games.

Get a DS Lite if you're anti-social like the majority of Anandtech OT. (This is not an insult, it's just like saying don't play a MMO if you really just want to solo all day long)

I endorse the DS Lite because the PSP is boring when they're no one available to play with.

You are smoking crack. The WiFi Connection games for DS are awesome and wildly popular. MKDS, Metroid, Animal Crossing, Tetris...all multiplayer, all excellent. Not to mention all the other games that have local wireless multiplayer.

Well thanks for the personal insult.

I'm glad you're having fun with the multiplayer of the DS Lite. But the games on the PSP as I stated in my post are all mainly multiplayer focused. And someone can just come in and say the same exact thing about how much fun they had on those games.

The DS Lite stands as a better console if you play by yourself. Sure you have multiplayer, but the PSP has a lot more games tailored toward multiplay.
