How to Backup a DS Cartridge.

Actually, you can with the link provided. The program is not very intuitive, but it works like a champ.

- It can also be used to backup/restore saved games. Just be careful with that because the first time I deleted my son's Pokemon Pearl save game with the special Manophy download. He was not happy.

ROFL!!
Should've taken a pic

So which one do you guys recommend for maximum compatibility with all the DS games (is compatibility even a concern with these) and most / best features? I have a 16GB SDHC I'd like to use for this.

Is it a regular SD card, or a microSD? Most of these units use microSD (the kind used for cell phones).

And most of the R4s, except for the newest version I believe, maxes out at 2GB. Anything above that will not work. I've heard that the newest revision works with some 4GB microSDHC but I can't confirm that.

I have about 20 ROMS on my 2GB Transcend microSD that I got from new egg for about 12 bucks. I love my R4 card and highly recommend picking one up if you're a DS owner.

Ok, scratch the 16GB idea. I do have a 4GB microSDHC card. So which one is the recommended one (the one with the most / best features)?

Well, after seeing this
What You Will Need:

* A Nintendo DS and original game cartridge you want to back up
* A working DLDI compatible flash cart (R4, CycloDS Evo, etc)
* A working wifi connection that you've tried with homebrew software
* A working FTP server (we'll be using SmallFTPd on Windows)
* The NDS Backup Tool (Wifi) on your flash cart
* Pure text editor (like Notepad)

And this
4MB 3.5 minutes 8MB 7 minutes 16MB 13.5 minutes 32MB 27 minutes 64MB 54.5 minutes 128MB 1 hour 49 minutes

I think I would rather just download.

I only have the R4 with a 4GB SDHC card, so I can't comment on other products, but I don't know why you'd need more than what the R4 does. It plays video, games, MP3s, and has photo slideshow programs. The only thing it doesn't do is play GBA/GB games without a Slot 1 cart, but I've played all the GBA/GB games I'll ever need to.
I know people have had problems using 4GB cards in their R4s, so YMMV. Mine works with my PNY and Kingston 4GB cards.

CycloDs Evolution is a much better card fellas. DL play is supposed to work and 99% compatibility. I just got mine and I love it. Also got the a-data 4gb micro sd card. Like the only microsd that will allow u to play Castlevania.

I must be lucky, both my 4GB cards (PNY & Kingston) and my 2GB card (Sandisk) allow me to play both Catlevanias without problems. Is there a certain point they mess up, or do they not play at all?
Catlevania is one game I've played through more than once. (I prefer PoR over DoS, but they're both great.)

The CycloDS Evolution looks nice.

This one looks interesting:

I never use the GBA slot on my DS Lite. With this I can put all my DS games on a Micro SD card and play them from the GBA slot and use the DS slot for new games / other games I haven't put into the Micro SD card yet.

Download play works on the R4 also. Sounds like you are saying the CycloDs Evolution is much better because that is the card that you have. Actually, the cards have nearly identical features. Basically the card is only as good as the support provided by the team that made it. The Cyclo team and the R4 team give nearly immediate updates when a new game doesn't work.

Bottom line, buy the cheaper card.

If you're willing to wait a couple of weeks to get it, this site is absolutely awesome for pricing and I have never had issue with them. I've ordered quite a bit from them too.

They have lots of stuff for the DS, the normal R4 kit is about $33 right now. Just remember its going to take 2-3 weeks usually or at least has always for me

Picked up the CycloDS Evolution today myself. It should be here sometime this week!

Do you acutally have a CycloDS? I would say feature wise CycloDS is way over the top with their Real Time save alone. Not to mention they have the best support for download play right out of the box and there are more exciting features coming in future updates (i.e. in-game text viewer for walkthroughs, etc.)

If you really want a cheap flash cart then why even bother with R4? DSTT is way cheaper at 24 dollars from Deal Extreme and it performs all the basic functions as well as any other flash cart out in the market right now. The only slight disadvantage is probably its relatively slow game loading speed.

Does anyone know the best place to buy the CycloDS from? Also, does the CycloDS do everything the R4 does? From reading around, it sounds like it does but can also do more (in game saves, etc). If I get the CycloDS, will I have to flash my DS Lite at all?

Thanks!

got a cyclods from realhotstuff.com. $53.00 + shipping, which was like $6 or $7.

no flashing of DS required. Works great for me! I got a 4 GB SDHC microsd card for $35 or so from Newegg.

Hey guys can someone please answer my questions?

1)What is the difference between DS, DS Lite and DSi?
2)Does the R4 work with ALL of them?
3)What are the best online retailers to buy the R4 from at the moment?
4)Can you play SNES, Sega Genesis and GBA roms on the DS? Do you need anything else aside from the R4 in order to do that?
4)How long does the battery last on the DS?

There's a place - Console Gaming - for questions like these and a nearly 2 yr old thread in Hot Deals is NOT it.

1. The DS is the old brick one with a crappy back light. The DS lite is the smaller sexy white(other colors now too) version. The DSi is Nintendo's new money printer and includes a camera and an sd storage slot so you can store media and games.

2. The latest generation cards work with all of them, forget about the R4 it was shutdown by Nintendo some time ago now all you see online are clones of it so you might as well get a cheaper clone like a n5.

3. DealExtreme no doubt
Get this one if you want a DSi
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.18944

4. Their are emulators but in my experience they suck. GBA will not be possible period... unless you get a slot 2 solution (supercard lite) which involves flashing your ds lite (the dsi won't work for this)

5. I get at least 4-6 hours of gameplay.

IMPO you should buy a DS lite the DSi is stupid I don't want a camera and MP3 player in my portable gaming system. And with a slot 1 solution you can use moonshell to play music and properly encoded movies.

Get a DS lite (might be better deals out there)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16868100038

Get a cheap slot 1 solution (they are all the same people will cry about blown fuses and such, but that problem has been eliminated and was only seen in early batches of the cheap cards)
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.15613

Get a 4gb microsd card (this is big enough for about 90 games, more than you will need trust me)
Edit: I guess merit line is banned here, but I love them for cheap sd cards.

One thing to note is that the new DSi doesn't have a "slot2" opening for GBA cartridges. Therefore, emulating GBA games might be harder (haven't looked into if this is possible yet). You need a special "NDSi" TopToy or Acekard chip to work with it. (Their is an R4 clone for the DSi as well).

I have 3 TTDS carts for my standard DS lites (for me and my 2 sons), and all have worked great. I just ordered another today as a spare - less than $6 shipped - you can't go wrong with that. Everyone seems to day "buy the Acecard2, its way better", but my Acecard2 went bad after 1 week, while my cheapo TopToy carts (and 2 N5 carts I also bought) have been working great for a long time.

Emulators:

SNES: You can play some of the SNES roms using SNEmulDS, but the more advanced SNES games, such as MarioRPG or Chronotrigger, don't work.

GBA: The best way to play GBA games on the DS Lite (or original DS) is to get a slot 2 cart. I have an EZ-Flash 3 and a Supercard. The EZ-Flash III works great (best compatbility) but is a bit of a pain to work with. The Supercard is easy to work with, and has a much larger capacity, but some games are hard to get working on it.

Sega Genesis: Never tried this, but they exist. From what I know, not all games work

NES: This system can be emulated quite well on the NDS. The best program is NesDS, which adds new features to the old NES games, such as real-time save, and "rewind"

Other: You can also emulate original Gameboy and Gameboy color games, Gamegear games, and several other older platforms.

The TopToy takes an SD card - I have an 8GB one in mine. The games take up about 2 GB, while the rest of the space is filled with music, and a few movies. If you want to use the DS Lite for movies and music (along with gaming) then I would recommend a 8GB card. If you use it just for games, then 4 GB is fine.
