Nintendo doesn't like taking risks, so when they sell a console at a loss they make sure that they can make it back with the peripheral and first party software sales that usually come with that initial buyer's money. So sure the Wii U might have sold to someone for a slight loss to Nintendo, but 1 game and a controller, and Nintendo's positive on profit for that particular buyer. I guess my main point was they would want to grow their install base more than get drawn into the crazy markups smartphone makers generally sell their products at.
I still think a phone is very unlikely though.
