"3:19PM: A note on price of console:

To get a better idea of what 25,000 yen is in USD, one needs to take purchasing power parity into account. While the direct translation is around $215, the latest PPP data (found here: http://www.oecd.org/std/ppp) shows 81 units in Japan to equate 100 units in the USA. "

So NYT may have called it right. BUT... SNES, N64 and GC ALL launched at $200/25k yen so it still wouldn't suprise me if they launched at $200

Stupid language barrier.

3:27PM: According to several reports, Wii Sports will NOT be included with the console. It will cost 4,800 Yen and includes the five different sports games we've all seen and heard about.

3:25PM: 16 games will be available on launch day from 10 different publishers. Cost of the games will be as reported earlier, 4,800 to 6,800 Yen. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will be a full price game at 6,800 Yen.

Full price sounds like $60 going by conversion, though I thought Nintendo stated $50. Maybe that was an average though. Wii Sports, by comparison, should be like $40.

I'm still holding out hope for $200 price point at the current listed bundle (1 controller, no game). SNES - GC all launched at $200 in the US and 25,000yen in Japan. Wii Sports sounds like it will only be standalone (for now... Nintendo always does bundles down the road).

Edit: And even if it does turn out to be $250, I won't have any qualms about dropping the $50 extra bucks. Been a LONG time since a console has struck my interest.

well they promised a lot of surprises and no dissappointments. i don't really see anything that would cause us to jump for joy. price at around 250, no included game, probably late november release date. how is that a surprise? more like a letdown if you ask me.

and the hype machine rolls on. sony gets a lot of crap for overhyping, but in this generation, it belongs to nintendo.

not sure why they are trying to be a media center. this goes against what nintendo was about before. looks like the focus went from gaming to sharing pictures and looking up the weather. wtf?

Those are just additional bonus features and not meant to be the main purpose of the console obviously. I don't know what gave you that notion. Nintendo's focus is always Gaming first.

In Thursday's USA Today:

$250
Nov. 19th.
"Included with the Wii is the Wii Sports game (with tennis, golf, basketball, and bowling)"

Yay.

Wii Sports being included looks pretty darn likely at this point.

If offered, I'd still consider a cheaper base console option. (provided that the only difference is in the game included, not the different hardware junk that MS and Sony are pulling)

Agreed. I don't want that game. At all.

$250 I expected, but launching Nov 19th sucks. I want my Wii noooooww....

Wii Preview Click through, there are tons of video of the interface, photo, weather & caricature apps, Zelda, virtual console, Opera, etc. I dig the weather globe.

Nope. Nintendo said they aren't concerned with HD.

I don't believe so. My understanding is that (like the Gamecube) they are limited to 480p.

Does anyone know the widescreen capabilities of the Wii? I can get by with it not being HD but if I have to stretch the image to widescreen or play with bars that's a dealbreaker. Are all games required to support widescreen?

From the sample vids on http://www.wii.com , the UI is all in 16:9, and I am 100% positive I read the other day that the ubisoft racing game is 16:9 native. So it's looking like even though it won't be in HD, it will be in 16:9 mode by default. but I dont think there has been an official statement, but i could be wrong.

All the pics of its interface on the japanese site are widescreen. I'd say it's a good chance everything but the VC games will be widescreen-capable (I sure hope so!).
