just in time for StarFox64 3D

So is Nintendo just porting N64 titles to it?

I was in Best Buy today, and they finally had one on display. They had Pilot Wings in it. The 3D effect is pretty impressive. Definitely a solid piece of hardware. Then I looked at the game selection and it was pretty slim.

Best Buy has also cut the price to $200 already. It's just a sale but that's a pretty drastic drop for them. They're not selling. Nintendo better hurry up and get some AAA titles on it that aren't old N64 games.

The 3DS "lite" is a couple of years away at least, but I think they fixed screen scratching problem already with bigger rubber bumpers to keep the bottom screen from touching the top screen.

Yea, I'm not in any rush to the 3DS any time soon. My first DS was the DS lite, and while I enjoyed the system, I did ended up buying it twice and selling it twice.

Picking it up now (or when the price drop hits) with the lack of quality software so far just guarantees I'd sell it when the next best thing comes along.

At the current time, there isn't really any great 3DS titles that aren't a remake...

Hopefully some better titles will come out in the future.

According to this article "Nintendo has been having trouble selling the 3DS since it launched in February. During the company's last fiscal quarter ended June 30, Nintendo sold just 710,000 3DS units worldwide. In the U.S., its sales figures during the period hit just 110,000 units."

Well seeing how every hand held out there is playing games now the market is getting flooded. Ipod touch 4 came out about the same time as 3DS. Also don't for get the Ipad too.

4 Million iPads Sold Since December, 60 Million iPod Touches Sold Since 2007
http://www.ihasapple.com/2011/04/4-...mber-60-million-ipod-touches-sold-since-2007/

Ipod touch 4 came out in sept 2010 while 3ds came out march or april 2011. I wouldn't call that the same time.

Yeah, I mean there's no way to sugarcoat it. Even in the absence of competition it's still pretty grim. I recall the DS having a pretty garbage first year as well yet go on to rule the world so it's far from a failure at this point.

Still, if I was a betting man, I wouldn't place my chips with any of these portable systems, future or past. Their era is done. They're as relevant as standalone MP3 players at this point. They'll exist, but they're going to be marginalized to an even greater extent going forwards.

Pretty much this. I don't think this price drop is going to save it.

This has all the making of Virtual Boy 2.0. Won't be as big failure but still fail.

I don't think their era is done, but the iPhone certainly changed the game big time. That's why the PSV is in a bit better of a position than the 3DS. People want their mobile devices to be like a Swiss Army Knife that offers instant gratification. Single function hardware is dying fast.

As for its first year, Nintendo pulled a Sony with the 3DS. Remember when the PS3 first came out. The thing had revolutionary hardware. It was the ultimate home entertainment device at the time. But it had very few games. The games it did have, sucked. Nintendo made the fatal error of developing the hardware first them letting the software come later. You can't do that today. Thats why Sony has been heavily focused on developing and marketing AAA titles for the PSV early on. They made that mistake twice, and they're not going to repeat it.

The PS3 had blu-ray, gaming, wireless internet, etc. it was expensive because of all the features + large HDD.

The 3DS is NOT revolutionary, and the games support just that. Re-hashed N64 games will not get you too far. Love the N64, but I will play those games on my N64, thank you.

$170 is still too much; to compete with mobile phones, this needs to be <$100.

I think its still the price of software that is going to need to change. Most parents aren't stupid. They're willing to pony up a little more up front knowing that games are $3.99 or less instead of $39.99. The market for adults looking for a portable game system is going to be basically nonexistent since pretty much any adult interested in a 3DS already has a smartphone. Kids are the only market left, and even then its not the clear cut winner.

I don't think its going to be virtual boy bad - that was an out and out failure. This has already surpassed that, but this isn't going to be a DS.

This. The iphone/Android with its 99 cents game apps will crater the market for dedicated handheld consoles.

This is more evidence that the answer to "will smart phones destroy the portable market" is: YES.

Many people get their smart phone for $0 - $99 now, so even $170 is much more than that and an extra expense when they already have the phone.
I have to disagree with this. I won't call smartphone games awful, but I will call them frustratingly simple. What can you possibly develop on $0.99, which in turn can only be played with an inaccurate touchscreen? There are a couple of genres which work well enough (which coincidentally also work well on the DS touchscreen), but everything else is a mess to play. A smartphone is not a suitable or even half-way suitable replacement for a handheld console.

The 3DS's problem isn't smartphones, the 3DS's problem is that it's not $250 better than the DS(i) everyone already has. If anything it's a step back because of the battery problems, which significantly undercuts its use as something to play on long trips (which as any parent can tell you, is the primary purpose of a handheld console). Smartphones are a distraction from the real problems the 3DS faces.

I wouldn't be surprised if the $170 price for the 3DS doesn't push down the price of Nintendo DSi models. (And cause the DS Lite to be dropped completely...)

The DS Lite is already quietly being phased out. It is getting harder to find at retail and even GameStop doesn't list new ones on its site. Only refurbished ones.

Your right. When the GB debuted around 20 years ago, most software was $19.99 or 24.99. Thats where the majority of titles should fall on the DS/3DS to compete. Maybe even some titles at $9.99 or less.

I'm confident this price reduction was always planned, if anything changed it just is happening a couple of months early.

At $170, it will be this years impossible to find Christmas gift. Y'all don't seem to understand who buys these things..

$250 wasn't a huge amount of money these days anyway. I never understood why everyone said it was too much.

The reason it isn't selling is simply because there's no good games for it. If Super Mario 3D and Mario Kart 3D were available at launch it would have sold out at $300.

It's not so much a question of cost as a question of value. Many people are already getting their portable gaming fix on a smartphone, many are fine with their DS or PSP. So it's not just $250 in a vacuum - it's a question of whether it's worth it to pay $250 for flawed hardware and the privilege to buy $40 software, and the good stuff isn't out yet. On top of what you already have.

I personally wouldn't pay $40 for a portable game even if they gave me the system for free....and I'm a diehard nintendo fan.

Their brand still holds weight, but it's been tarnished by the wii and they cant just coast lazily on it anymore.

I'm elated to hear they just suffered their first quarterly loss ever. It's time for them to wake up and they need a fire lit under their ass. It's time for their production values to go up, some fresh new IP, something to get people excited again. If they can't handle making a decent platform any longer, I'm perfectly fine with them just making software.

As I mentioned earlier, $250 is too much compared to its competitors, which are literally mostly Nintendo's older portable consoles (DSi, DSxl). There are gamers and parents that don't mind throwing money around that will buy the 3DS, but when it comes down to it... do you buy junior the cheaper portable with a larger and cheaper game selection or do you buy the expensive one that also comes with plenty of downsides such as battery life.

As others have mentioned, it also doesn't help that it lacks a good app that isn't a remake.

In 2008 dollars I'd agree, but after 3 years of a very depressed economy, and in the US unemployment remains above 9% average, and much higher in some places (not to mention other major economies in the west), $250 hits many budgets a lot harder than in the past, and couple that with the other factors brought up such as perceived value and other technologies competing for similar entertainment genre's. Also you are trying to sell people on a new type of gaming (3D) which people have to get used to or be convinced of. All together this probably has hit sales figures. I'm sure trying to launch this in a world economy 3 years into major recession, and analysts believe it will continue for 2 or 3 more years..... yeah, lack of good games isn't helpin

yeah, lack of good games isn't helping either, just like lack of games (and high price) caused PS3 to have a very slow launch.

I got mine when it came out and have been enjoying it since. I don't regret paying full price for it and I'm stoked at getting the 20 free eshop games!! Wooo! I just hope Nintendo doesn't go down the tubes! I love this company.

To me, it seems like the problem is that Nintendo has no one to compete with... except itself. The DS/DSi actually outsold the 3DS (link). With the Wii, Nintendo could at least try and market themselves as the more affordable alternative, but the 3DS was simply too expensive compared to their own older hand-held. I'm not really sure if the PSP would have much to do with it... it might a little bit since the PSP is cheaper as well.

Maybe someone can answer this as well... what's the WiFi encryption compatibility like? Based on this Wikipedia article ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3ds#Technical_comparison ) it looks like the 3DS is compatible with everything as there are no caveats listed, but I know the original DS can only use WEP and the DSi/DSxl say that it may not work with some WEP/WEP2. Is that an issue of TKIP vs AES? I know my PSP refuses to connect to my network.

My 3DS has no problem connecting to my WPA2 secured network.

I think that's referring to specific games. The DSi itself can connect to WPA networks, but if you're trying to play a game with online features that was released before the DSi then you'll be unable to access the online features while using WPA encryption.

They likely are. That stupid 3D screen is incredibly expensive.

I've actually come to really like the 3D screen. I agree it's not a game changer but so long as you don't have any physical problems looking at the screen for long periods it certainly does add something to the experience. After playing through Ocarina of Time in 3D I must say I feel like I'm missing something when the 3D is turned off. It's subtle but definitely noticeable and something I personally enjoy. Now if they can just get some good fucking titles out. I'm happy playing DS games on it for now though.

So is anybody going to take Nintendo up on their offer? I'm seriously considering it.
