???

Why would you think that?

Because the Sony brand doesn't have the cache it once did, at least in the USA.

They used to be a technology leader, now they make stuff that isn't any better than competing products, but is more expensive.

And that's across their product line, not just video game stuff.

I assume the brand name still works in Asia.

And let's not forget that the yen exchange rate does Japanese companies absolutely no favors in terms of profitability.

Going 3D was Nintendo's blunder

Making every game push the 3D hard was the mistake. Let's look at the top ten selling Nintendo games on the Wii and DS:

Nintendogs
Animal Crossing
New Super Mario Bros. DS
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Pokemon D/P
Brain Training
Mario Kart DS
Mario Kart Wii
Wii Sports / Resort
Wii Fit / Plus

Most of them are 2D games or have low quality graphics. Few of them use the console gimmicks like touchscreens or motion control as a central piece.

Notably not on that list: Mario Galaxy / 2, Zelda TP/ST/PH, Metroid Other M. So why is Nintendo intent on pushing the latter kind of title with MUCH higher budgets and much lower sales.

So why do they want to push 3D Mario, 3D Kid Icarus, Skyward Sword and OoT 3D so much? Just make more 2D Mario and Wii-series games - cheaper and will sell much more. The data shows that people want 2D Mario much more than 3D! Galaxy ~ 8m Galaxy 2 ~ 4m NSMB DS ~ 20m NSMB Wii ~ 20m

Seeing the price drop that much that quickly is kind of shocking for Nintendo. Though when you really think about it they don't have too much of a choice. The PS Vita is going to be much more powerful, and will be starting out at $250. It will also have a lot of good launch, or near launch titles. The only thing the 3DS really has going for it is the 3D, which in my experience most people don't really care about. At $170 Nintendo has a much better chance of selling units. Yes they will sell them at a loss, so they will need to make up for that loss with software sales. Problem now is that even at $170 for the console there simply aren't any good games to but for the platform, other than re-makes which most people aren't going to want to pay full retail for.

As far as Handhelds VS consoles, I think there will always be a place for handhelds, but they will become more and more niche. Of course cell games/tablet game will never have the controls and depth of games on a dedicated handheld, but IMO they really don't need to. They just need to be *good enough.* Just simple games used to kill some time.

Just picked one up at walmart for 170.

in store or online?

they have the $169 price online but that's only a preorder to be shipped on the 12th

to get in on the Ambassador program you have to have one before the 12th

I'm trying to decide if I want this now due to the walmart deal. I've got a ds lite already but guess I could sell it.

If the 20 free games interest you then I say go for it, otherwise there's no reason not to wait.

Hmm... they didn't interest me when the net price was $30, but if the net price for the games is $0 then it's tempting. Still no actual 3DS games I'm interested in playing available now. Probably not available for $170 at Walmarts here in Canada either, although apparently Costco here is/was selling them at that price.

Walmart here is selling them for $198. I wonder if the free games are worth more than $20. Might have to go to Costco tomorrow though. It is $169.99. Decisions, decisions.

The lack of games doesn't bother me too much as I know there are at least a few titles coming down the pipe that I'm interested in and there are a shit load of great DS games I can keep myself busy with till then. The (old) DS is by far my most used system. Despite the fact that I have all the others too.

Bought one in cosmic black. I'm just setting it up later. I'll post a full review on my website eventually.

fffffffffffffffffFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuu

they just had to wait to release a red one

I like the red but I'm not sure I'd want to be out in public all the time with that . I carry my black one on the daily transit commute to work all the time.

*shrugs* $170 seems to be an okay price for it. The software is what's too expensive.

I agree. I was a big anti-3DS'er at launch because of the price, but $170 is fine. There's just still no games I want to play on it aside from OoT, which I already own three other ways...
