I personally have no problem with most refurb equipment, but HDs I stay away from.

This is for two reasons. One...it has moving parts, which seem a lot more likely to fail again if they were broken in the first place.

#2, I worked in a computer store for a long time, and when we got drives replaced/repaired under warranty, the refurbs that came back failed again within a year about 1/3 of the time.

These prices aren't THAT much lower than many of the new deals out there now, plus you don't know how long you will get warranty for since you don't know how long ago they were manufactured, (previous comments about them not caring where they are from as long as they are less than 3yrs is correct, and goes for any drive manufacturer).

Just think of how many numbnutts there are out there returning $hit because they don't know how to set jumpers and stuff like that. I would take my chances with a refurb for that kind of savings...especially with the full warrantee. Maxtor is pretty good with exchanges.

I think you take your chances with ANY HD you buy. I have had several hard drives fail in my computer years. I've had two IBM SCSI drives fail just recently. One, within a week of installation. Didn't lose anything there. But I had a 10K RPM drive fail 9 months into it's life. Luckily for me I TRUST NO HARD DRIVE, NEW OR REFURB. Everything was on CDR. But just to relate my experience, Maxtor replaced the 10gig drive that failed on me last year, with no problems. However, IBM gave me some real trouble, since they absolutely refuse to repair OEM drives. But they did repair the Non-OEM drive without problem. Oh, the replacement drives from IBM appeared to be refurb, but I'm no expert on that.

Here's hoping you never lose a HD.

apoppin, that just means that if a drive is sold through an OEM, say, Dell, that Maxtor themselves doesn't cover it directly to the customer. In other words, if your Dell has its Maxtor HD fail, you go to Dell to get it fixed, instead of straight to Maxtor. In fact, that wording leads me to believe that Dell is probably covered themselves, just not the 2nd removed customer from Maxtor.

It doesn't say OEM packaged drives are not covered. They definitely are, if you are not reselling them. Maxtor has some of the best no questions asked RMA policies in the industry.

Perhaps they may cover your OEM purchased refurbished HD. They are not legally liable to do so.

And - personally - I would NEVER buy a refurbished drive. This is my own personal opinion. You can do as you wish. It is your money and your gamble. HDs are so cheap now (look at the recent sales), an old saying comes to my mind - "Penny-wise and pound-foolish."

First off, buy it or don't buy it - its everyone's choice. Refurb has a stigma associated with it as being used, broken, fixed, etc...Sometimes thats true, sometimes its not.

Some of you are mixing your terms.

There are many ways that Hard Drives are delivered to customers...

1. Retail Box
2. OEM/Static Bag
3. In new computers from "OEM" brands such as HP, Compaq, Dell, etc...

The warranty refers to #3. If you buy a branded PC with a hard drive, that drive is serviced through the maker of the PC, not the maker of the hard drive.

To imply that #2, OEM/Static Bag components are not serviced by the manufacturer is ludicrous. That would mean that 99.9% of every hard drive sold off pricewatch has no warranty.

My guess is that these are customer purchases that were returned for some reason and found to be OK by newegg. Either that or they are a special purchase from the manufacturer on returns found to have no problems or repaired. Anyone who has ever worked in a computer store knows that much of the returned stuff has no problems.

Another point I'd like to address is what hard drive do you think you get when you get a replacement part from your favorite manufacturer? This is the easiest way for a manufacturer to get rid of refurbs.

I'm confused why so many people take so much time to tell us why we shouldn't buy refurbs. I honestly dont care if any of you buy them.

I can only speak for myself. I view this forum as an extended family. Since the prices for refurbished HDs are not that much cheaper than brand new retail HDs, I just want to point out a (possibly much better) alternative (BB/Staples/OD current sales).

Well I for one have been BURNT by NEWEGG sending me parts as REFURB that were INDEED used parts!!!!!!!!
There isn't enough money to get me to buy a NEWEGG listed refurb.
Secondly a 60 gig 7200 rpm drive was 114.00 at dell brand new. after coupons.

I have RMA'D maxtors and gotten bad drives in return "worse condition than one i sent in" and on second drive I rma'd they sent me another "refurb'd" drive. Their policy at the time stated the drive they send you in return is only warrantied for 30 days so be cautious
if you think your going to send a 2 year old drive and get another 1 year warranty or more on the new one. READ their policy.

IBM has the most fubar'd rma but they've sent me brand new drives everytime.

Remember newegg.. BURN ME ONCE SHAME ON YOU BURN ME TWICE SHAME ON ME!!!!!

You will get the 30 day newegg warranty, and whatever of the original 3 year maxtor warranty is left.

BTW I'm one of the few people who has gotten burned by newegg.
It's gotta be my luck though, Everyone I know has had great luck with 'em.
I bought an Epox 8KHA+ and an Athlon 1.2 Axia, Ordered 'em at the same time, got the Chip one day, and the Motherboard about a week later. Neither shipped 'till about a week after my order was approved. And when I got the motherboard, the Northbridge fan was broken off, the Board was Dusty, the BIOS Chip was replaced, and was all scratched around it, the PS/2 and Keyboard Ground Covers were missing off the baord altogether, the Manual was missing, and the IDE Cables were obviously used. it should've been advertised as 'Used, as is' not 'New'.
But I took another chance on Newegg and bought a 60 Gig 7200 RPM Drive this morning.
We'll see what happens!

Why is that everyone is afraid to buy a refurbished item? It means that it had a problem, was ripped apart and repaired, then rigorously tested by a human. Grant it the human may not be that good at his job, but I have found most people in such a job are competent and are up to the task. So what would you rather buy? Something a machine made and may not work and had to be sent back anyway, or a refurb that definitely works just fine?

I've bought some refurb stuff before, probably will again. Newegg's refurb program has been dubious to say the least, do a forum search (if you're a subscriber anyway) for Newegg and refurb, notice how many people get DOA refurb stuff and have to send it back again.

They're my first stop shopping, I just stick to the new item listings.

does that make you feel better? i guess i'm jerk cause i don't update my post every two seconds. folks around here need to relax a bit. it seems that most of the real jerks hang out in the hot deals forums to prey upon every mistake or probelm with ppls posts to make themselves feel better. sad, really sad.

i'll update the post. i hope a few have been able to enjoy this post regardless of the negativity that has followed.

Maybe a refurb would be a good HD to upgrade your ReplayTV or Tivo player... Just a thought I'm perusing....

Thank-you! I thoroughly enjoyed your thread. It certainly got more than the average attention thanks to a very lively discussion.

Oh, and about the "thread-crapping" part . . . there is no such thing in Hot Deals (as compared with FS/T). We are looking for the BEST "hot deal". For some of us, that might be a Newegg refurbished OEM HD. For others, the alternative sales this weekend for the new retail HDs are another option.

It's all good.

My .02 - I have 4 drives currently that I've been given by friends 3 Maxtors - 20-30-and 40 and a quantum 30.
Also have had in the last year a 6.4 quantum and seagate 28.5 that i've traded and sold...
All of these drives are still running! I've never had any drives die - call me lucky
But my point is that none of these were new when I got them and I use them all alot regularly - working them out...
A cheap drive doesn't mean it's trash.

No idea. You can still get some refurbished Newegg drives online for inexpensive . . .

or

. . . I got my second 30GB 7200 ATA100 Retail Maxtor from B&M OfficeDepot for $69.95 after MIR and you can too . . . at least through Sunday.
