is the 80 gig 5400 for 125 a good deal? Im planning on using two of them in raid 1 for a file server. Are they too slow for that?

What I don't really understand is these people who post what they
think is a deal getting all defensive when other knowledgable types
post to point out why it might not be such a great deal after all.
You took your shot, you missed, move on. Don't babysit the thread
with defensive whining ("you crapped on my deal post...waaah!", "I
know someone who bought one of these refurbs and saved over 60 cents
relative to retail and his drive hasn't stopped once and only make
clicking noises sometimes...waaah!", "What do you mean Newegg refurbs
are available in minute quantities and barely qualify as deals because
they'll all be sold out before anyone gets a chance at them...waaah!")

Get on with your life and find another deal.

Sheesh.

Out of several Western Digitals, Seagates, and Maxtors, I have lost 1 WD and 1 Maxtor. Both replaced free under warranty. I don't think brand makes a difference these days.

depend who you buy from, some refurbish maybe DEFECTIVE item they gotten back and was never sent back to the manufacturer to be repaired. therefore someone sent in the dead stuff you get that the second time and have to deal with their pain. so refurbish maybe reconditioned or opened item that doesn't work period. folks be for warned that you are taking a chance here to save a measly 15-25 bucks, you may not feel that it worth it once you have gotten DOA from some bad resellers like I have.
DO NOT BUY REFURBISH UNLESS YOU ARE CHEAP OR YOU ARE TOO POOR TO PAY A LITTLE MORE. This is like Generic Dimm Vs Quality brands. bottomline is, if you dont care about getting something that always work right the first time then go right ahead, no one is making you.

Why would you buy something refurbed like a hard drive? It's not like these things are easy to repair, and if they weren't repaired correctly (if at all) they're gonna go bad, prolly Real Soon Now.
