It means you are using a 40 conductor cable instead of an 80 conductor cable with your hard drive. Notice I said conductor, not pin. Both cables have the same connectors with 40 pins. You need the newer 80 conductor cable for the faster IDE speeds to work properly. UDMA66 and up require it, I believe. The newer cables have a ground wire with each signal wire to help eliminate interference and crosstalk at the higher data speeds.
Your mobo is just warning you about that and probably limiting you to UDMA33 speeds.
The newer cable has much finer wires. It's pretty easy to tell them apart. If your hard drive is UDMA66 or faster, then you should get the newer UDMA ide cable.
Yeah, if you don't have blue, black, and grey connectors on the cable, it's probably not the correct cable.
Incidentally, the signal to the computer that you have the correct cable is that pin 34 is grounded. If pin 34 is not grounded, you get the cable warning.
