That's a big thing imo

The adoption of PC chips also means that the new console won't be able to play games created for any of the three previous PlayStations, even though the PS4 will have a Blu-ray disc drive, just like the PS3. Instead, Sony said gamers will have to stream older games to the PS4 through the Internet.

If only we had found out about this weeks ago, it might have been included in the Official PS4 thread!

Oh wait......

its a non issue IMO
id wager the majority of people who will get a ps4 already have a PS3 to plat older games on
and FWIW i have a fat PS3 with backwards compat that i have never used ever

Original hardware is better anyway. Even PS2 sucked at playing a lot of PS1 games correctly.

Just compare FF7 title screen side by side on PS2 vs PS1 and you'll see right away... And thats just a title screen.

I have 2 PS3's and 2 XBox's, and would prefer to just swap them out when the new consoles come out. I don't have any spare HDMI connections and would also prefer a nice clean setup (I don't want a stack of consoles sitting around). So for me, I definitely would like to see BC on the next gen consoles, but I might just be out of luck.

agreed. Unless I can use my PC to play them, Id rather not have an extra console around taking up space.

Right now I have a 360 and ps3, and then i use my PC for
nes
snes
genesis
n64
ps1
~ps2
saturn
gamecube
wii
etc

It would be nice if i could play any PS3 games on a PS4.

That being said I probably wont be buying a ps4 unless some really good exclusives come out - in which case im still probably gonna wait a few years. (the only reason i have a ps3)

Doubt it will matter. Given that Microsoft is probably going to go with an x86 CPU as well, they won't have backwards compatibility either. So I doubt anyone is going to have a serious advantage over the other. You could argue that the WiiU is backwards compatible, but there aren't exactly loads of games worth playing on it so I don't know how much that really matters.

It makes sense since they went with an X86 CPU compared to whatever IBM cell crap they had before. If they wanted to include BC into PS4 it would just increase the price of the console.

Where is Lumberg when you need him? Uhmmmm yeah, I'm going to need you to make the PS4 BC mmmmkay?

Having to keep so many consoles around to play my libraries is unacceptable. At least the PS3 lets me skip having a PS2. Still have the xbox because some titles do not play on the 360. I am loath to part with it, but something will have to give at some point. Not until a exclusive title forces me hand though. Maybe a great R&C or GoW for PS, or Gears of War for xbox.

Including Cell/RSX inside the PS4 would be worth well over $100-150 in parts. It's not happening, period.

However, the good news is that the PS4 looks to be "PC-ish" enough in architecture design that the PS5 will probably run PS4 games natively. It's just a CPU + GPU + uber-fast RAM. Maybe some special sauce, but it's just heavy on high performing specs this time instead of confusing hyperbolic delusions of grandeur.

I'll just upgrade my HTPC's video card from here on out and buy Nintendo consoles since 95% of their good games are not also available on the PC.

No I'm not a console hater. Hell, I own a 360, PS4, and Wii U. I'm just not excited about the next generation of consoles and the million ways these companies are trying to dick over the consumer. I'm done, I'm just done.

I absolutely would not have purchased my Wii U if it did not have BC. It was a major selling point for sure. Probably the most or 2nd most important feature to me.

I was under the impression that the 360 is an x86 type thing. Either way, I'd be surprised if MS didn't do what they did last time with software patches on some titles like the Halo franchise.

I thought backwards compatibility was important to me, so I bought one of the OG fat PS3 60 GB before they cut the backwards compatibility with the release of the slim models. I've used it maybe 5 times, and it was always a disappointment. Part of getting the latest and greatest is not having to suffer through graphics that were designed for a 4x3 TV in the late 90s/early 2000s. I think this is a complete and utter non-issue for 99% of people looking to purchase a PS4.

Maybe I am in the minority, but once PS3 came out, I lost all interest in playing PS2 games. I have a feeling that when the PS4 comes out, there are going to be cool new games to take my interest from my PS3 games. Same goes for my XBOX. I don't think I have played a game besides Counterstrike/TF2 that hasn't come out in the past yea for my PC either.

My thoughts as well. There's always a lot of talk about backwards compatibility but I just can't see anybody being turned off buying a console for the simple fact that it doesn't have BC. BC is only relevant in the first year or two of the new console as it is, which means anybody who thinks they care about BC most likely already has the older system to play on, if needed.

Plus most of the major releases coming up like Watch Dogs, Destiny and others are going to be on the PS4 anyhow so you won't have to worry about missing out on them.

Technically, the only BC that has to be dropped because of the change in architecture is PS3. The hardware inside is powerful enough to do PS2 and PS1 backwards compatibility (like how current PS3s can do PS1, but not PS2). The question is whether or not they'll take the time to make sure that emulator works for this system (there's x86 emulators already out there for each of them). I kind of have a feeling they won't, but they could.

I bought an original 3 because of b/c and never having a 2. This will be a big factor in me not buying a 4 for quite some time.

From what we've heard, emulation is supposed to come via their streaming service

More like silent majority. Most people will move on completely.

Some people will say that BC is primarily for at launch when there aren't many new titles, but given how focused people will be on the new games I think the BC doesn't really come up until later on when there's a rut in new releases. It's nice then to just have one box and still be able to play some old games, but I think most people just don't care. Given the variety of architectures used over the last couple generations you either have to significantly increase cost to include old hardware, or try and overpower it through emulation.

Most of the time when backwards compatibility is super important for someone its just for one or two games, maybe a handful, in which case I wonder why you can't just hold onto the old console.

I am personally less interested in having just one box and more interested in access to some of these games when I just get an itch to play them one day, even though I usually don't get very far into most of them before quitting. The really old stuff is ok, but the current generation is so (relatively) prone to failure you never know when you might be locked out of your catalog of games. Despite my huge backlog of games from Steam sales, I still periodically pull out an old console or maybe an emulator to play through something. But if I just didn't have them still I probably wouldn't think on it so hard. I also enjoy too many different types of games, and I've been gaming across multiple platforms, including PC, since the NES era, so there's too much to spend a lot of time going back, even if I only pick out the best.

The bigger story here is Excite still exist. I haven't been there since the 90s.
PS1 support should be there day1. Most of the PS3's PS2 emulator will probably need to be rewritten but I would expect the PSN's PS2 games to work eventually. Then there's Gaikai rumor for PS3 compat.

This might be an issue if the system wasn't launching with kill zone, watch dogs, and drive club among possibly more titles.

Is your ps3 going to burst into flames because you got a ps4?

Some of the arguments people come up with...just make no sense to me.

It makes no sense to you that people don't want 2 Sony game consoles ?

I find it hard to believe it makes NO sense. I can understand you not agreeing, but it literally makes NO sense ? That seems like an exaggeration.

I only have so many HDMI ports on my receiver, and limited space on my AV rack.

I have a PS2 (component), PS3, 360, and HTPC connected now and have no room or spare ports.

If the PS4 and 720 both lack BC, I won't be in any rush to add them and remove an existing device.

Make sense now?
