No boot issue

System is as follows:

Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra-9
A64 3200+
2x512mb Corsair VS DDR 3200
ATI X800XL
Antec TrueBlue 480

The back story...

I was having slow performance and noticed the HD thrashing quite a bit. Decided to defrag. System rebooted its self during defrag but came back up and was normal so I dismissed it. The next morning the system tried to load windows 4 times before finally coming up. I brought the system down and brought it into work with me (I work in an IT dept) to run diagnostics. From my house to work the system now will not boot at all. If you press the power button the fans spin for about 1/2 of a second and then all is dead. Nothing on screen, no beep codes, nota.

The PSU was pulled and is confirmed to be good. I took the system down to base config (1 memory stick, vid card, CPU) and still get same issue. Fan spins for half a second and then nota. Just trying to get some sort of beep code I removed the vid card and got nothing. Pulled the memory and CPU and left just the board hooked up to the PSU (with drives attached to PSU for load but not connected to the board) and got nothing.

I started looking at the beep codes (AMI bios) and can not determine if I'm supposed to get a beep code with no cpu or not. This leaves me with an undetermined cause of death. I have no other s939 parts to test with (The company I work for is all Dell so all Intel.). Any guesses?

Hard drive thrashing? Were there any other symptoms, like maybe onboard devices not working or something? I am not sure that the mobo will do anything without a CPU. It is definately cpu or mobo though. When it would fail to boot would it just restart or would it hang for a while? I would say that its probobly the motherboard, just because I don't think CPU's tend to just die whereas motherboards have a bit more of a rep for that. Anyway I have a thread on my own issues so... yeah maybe im not the one to ask

Thrashing = Lots of HD access. Tends to happen if the drive hasnt been defraggmented in a while because windows is having to grab bits and pieces of files from all over the place.

All symtoms that I could tell are in my original post. The power would come on and then go off. Nothing on screen at all.

What were your CPU temps like, did you ever overclock? Unless you really overclocked hard and got your CPU fried I think it would have to be the motherboard. It might be something like a problem with the power switch. If it was your CPU I think you would have had a bit more warning; hang-ups and such. This sounds like a power supply or motherboard problem.

System was not overclocked and has decent cooling. Power switch is an interesting thought though. I don't think its the switch but I will look into that before I order new parts.
