Laura Nyro, what can I say? She had a tremendous voice and wrote some really great songs which were covered by more famous people and groups, almost always without them changing her magical arrangements one whit . . . or matching her vocal artistry.
Between 1968 and 1970, a number of artists had hits with her songs: The 5th Dimension with "Blowing Away", "Wedding Bell Blues", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness", "Save the Country", and "Black Patch"; Blood, Sweat & Tears and Peter, Paul & Mary with "And When I Die"; Three Dog Night and Maynard Ferguson with "Eli's Comin'"; and Barbra Streisand with "Stoney End", "Time and Love", and "Hands off the Man (Flim Flam Man)".
This album is her tribute to some of the great commercial soul music of the 60s, done with Patti LaBelle's backup singers. It you grew up with 60s soul like I did and you love the lyrical beauty of the fine, fine voice of a gifted artist, this is your huckleberry, my friends.
