no cd's

all of the sudden neither my cd or cdrw show up in windows, when the system post's the line where my cdrw usually is is garbled with odd charact4ers, and the cd doesn't show up at all. any ideas? oh, it's an asus p5a mobo,award bios,k6-2 500,win98 1-ed. tia,jer

Did you try removing in device mgr and reboot? Might even try remove , shut down and pull the cables off, reboot. Let the system run without them,then shut down and reconnect. All else fails reload WIN

If it's garbled in bios, it has nothing to do with windows. Try reseating all of the cable connections. You could try redetecting IDE devices in bios, or clear cmos.

the bios are all set to auto, and i'm trying to keep from reinstalling win on this rig. i have 3 systems networked and they all went to heck about 3 weeks ago. (after a lightening storm) i have to have one rig online at all times. i'm using my old pb 266 as a server, it's f'd up as can be but it works. i'm on by proxy now. the controllers are non existant in windows both my cdrom and my cdrw, along with my scanner just disappeard. in device mgr. i'm getting to the point of pulling all the systems apart and starting over! i'd really like an easy fix. but if ya'll know i'm screwed just tell me. thanx, jer

Try clearing the cmos.

Lightning storm eh??? You probably fried something. or it could have just corrupted your cmos if you're lucky.

One time when I was installing a new HD
(copying the old one onto it) I got a bunch of garbage
because I had the drive jumper set wrong.
(I think I forgot to switch it to master
when I took the old one out.)

Are the two drives on the secondary controller?
Maybe if you switched one to your primary,
you might get one of them to work?

I didn't think cd-roms showed up in Safe mode
unless you're loading "real" mode drivers.
Maybe you're accidently loading "real" mode drivers in
regular mode.
