I can't think of one good reason to have placed it on the bottom. I'd like to know what the product engineers have to say about it.

With the lanyard it'll hang that way so you can lift it up and look at the screen. I dislike the placing of the headphone jack, too, but I bought one. Have a 60GB Photo, but I can definitely use the Nano.

i believe as thin as it is, you cannot have both the screen and the jack fit on the same end

Why is the headphone plug on the bottom such a big deal for you guys? Personally, I don't see a problem for the top or the bottom.

Don't get me wrong... I'm itching to blow some money on the nano. Makes sense about the lanyard orientation. Yet personally, I would never wear an MP3 player around my neck...

Makes sense... Duhh, seems obvious now that you have said it!

Anyone think they'll give these away in promotions for IBooks and Powerbooks? They were doing the iPod Mini, but that's now gone...

Bah, ordered one. Never thought I'd order an iPod, but this thing is untouchable by competitors. Companies will be playing catch-up for months.

The 1GB MobiBlu was a close second choice (with an FM radio, FM record, voice record, size, price, etc.), but I wasn't a fan of the ~8 battery life. Nano is getting a true 14 hours from reviews I've read.

maililly because you cant put it in your pocket without it being upside down

and IMO using a jack that sticks straight out is a bad idea, its extreamly easy to torque the HF jack and break it

I'm not sure why orientation matters when it's in your pocket. I would think orientation would be very important when it's hanging on your neck or in an armband (in both cases the jack being on the bottom works out to its advantage).

it makes it confusing to operate it without looking at it

i have an iAudio X5L 30 gig and i can operate it when its in my pocket withot looking at it
i almost never take it out to look at it, its always upright and the buttons always do what they need to

upside down in ur pocket its probably slightly easier to control blind as with it faced out the buttons are on the right side and not mirrored like they would be with another player. this could be solved by having it screen towards theigh but how would u reach then.. that being said i think its probably mostly design limitation from space as said.
