No DNS With Static IP

I changed the IP address on a WinXP Pro machine from DHCP to static, but now the machine can no longer go to any web sites. The other machine at this location still has no problems. They are both behind a Linksys BEFVP41 router. This router connects to another BEFVP41 to create a VPN. This machine can ping the IP addresses of any other machine as well as its router. It can go to a web site if I use the IP address instead of the domain name, so I'm sure it's a DNS problem.

I put in a static IP address of 192.168.17.11, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway 192.168.17.10, and Primary DNS Server 192.168.17.10. 192.168.17.10 is the IP address of the LAN side of the Linksys BEFVP41 router.

I've setup machines with static IP addresses on other networks and never had this problem. Shouldn't the BEFVP41 router forward DNS queries to the ISP's DNS servers automatically?

soho routers genrally dont perform DNS caching you will need the nameservers of your ISP. yo can either call and find out what they are, or use tools like nslookup and/or Dig to find out for yourself

If you go to the configuration web page of your router, under status, you should see listed the DNS servers of your ISP.
Just write them down and add them to the TCP/IP properties of your lan connection.

OR

You could switch back to DHCP (Obtain IP Address Automaticaly) on your Lan connection do an ipconfig from a command line and record the IP addresses of your ISP's DNS servers there.
