That's a funny post, there was a guy over at tomshardware thinking the Athlon 5350 is better for gaming than an i3 4160 because it's quad core and ignored everyone in the replies and asked the same question again. lol
I would take a cheap AMD quad core over that Pentium dual core, even overclocked to insane speeds, everyday.
i3 versus AMD quad core is a more even match, the quad core will pull ahead in well threaded games, but in general the i3 will win.
I assume you are talking about the Microcenter Deal. Even with tax, the cpu/mb combo deals are unmatched if you happen to live close to one. You just have to be careful about buying other stuff though, because usually PSUs, video cards, etc. can be gotten cheaper on-line.

I would agree with you on the pentium, but I think you will be hard pressed to find any games where a quad core AMD (either FX or FM2) beats a Haswell i3 when using a discrete card.
