So I am using Power DVD and a 1900xt, when I goto the information tab in the powerDvd configurations menu, is says that there is not video accelerator detected, Has anyone else had this happen to them, what do I do to fix this? I have the checkbox for video acceleration checked and I get the same results. I also noticed in WMP 11 under the performance tab, Video Acceleration I cant change the "prefered" decoder from software to hardware, is this normal... is it related to the PowerDVD issue?

Thanks

Thanks

As far as WMP 11 this is normal. I think you need an actual dedicated card for WMP to remember that you can accelerate the decode through HW.

In PowerDVD you SHOULD be able to enable it. I would double check your drivers, because PowerDVD definitely supports HW decode acceleration.

To get the real HW deinterlacing and acceleration you need AVIVO for ATI or Purevideo(HD) for Nvidia.

OK I downloaded the AVIVO Complete package from ATI.com, I installed it but there is no difference, Power DVD is not detecting the Video Accelerator. Do I need the ATI multimedia center?

thanks

Ugh I don't remember if you need to use ATI's Video Playback software to get the benefits of their HW deinterlacing and what not.

Also IIRC PowerDVD reports that it isn't detecting it when a Video isn't playing. Are you playing a Video when watching the video. If not try playing a video (DVD) while watching and it SHOULD report that DirectX VA is enabled.

If that doesn't work we can try a few other things.

reboot after installing ati drivers. I am sure you already did that though!

one more thing, powerdvd wont switch on video acceleration if eagle vision is enabled!

OK I have tried all the ideas and the issue remains, here is what PowerDVD says about the hardware I have while playing a DVD:
Hardware Information :
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+ running at 2420 MHz
3DNow! Technology : In Use
Enhanced 3DNow! Technology : In Use
3DNow! Professional Technology : In Use
IA MMX Technology : In Use
IA Streaming SIMD Extensions : In Use
IA SSE 2 : In Use
Video Accelerator : Not Detected
Multispeakers Audio Device : Sonix USB (not in use)
SPDIF Output Device : Sonix USB (not in use)

I have the Catalyst 6.12 drivers, Catalyst® 6.12 Avivo? Suite for X1000 series products for Windows XP Professional/Home Edition , and the English Language version of Multimedia Center, am I possible missing something? I noticed in the Add/Remove Programs applet in the control panel the multimedia center is not listed, is this normal?

again, thanks for all your efforts

Joshua

any other ideas?
thanks

Hmmm, Video Accelerator should definitely be detected. Under the video properties you do have the box next to "Enable Hardware Video Acceleration" checked right? Also it should recognize that you are using AVIVO acceleration (Mine recognizes the Purevideo acceleration).

After that you will have to check your ATI video properties. I dont have an X1xxx series card to look around on so I'm sorry I cant help you more in that area.

Despite what it says, play a movie and hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and bring up the performance monitor. Let me know what the CPU utilization hangs around...it may be using HW acceleration just not telling you.

My X1900XTX allows me to enable hardware acceleration using Power DVD v7 as long as CLEV-2 is disabled... havn't tried Cat 6.12, but it worked fine using 6.6 & 6.11 which I'm running currently. This card is in my backup PC so I can't check WMP 11 right now with ATI, but the hardware acceleration option is greyed out on my main PC running an 8800GTX too.. first time I've thought about it since I don't really use it very often.

The PowerDVD I have is an outdated version, it is the XP version that came bundled with a DVD burner I bought a few years ago so I think that is the problem, I got a different question now. what does the ATI rage theater chip actually do? Do I need anysort of special software to take advantage of it?

thanks

I think it's for VIVO (video in/video out).

Why not try something free like Media Player Classic?
It comes in the CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack) which is the best there is.
http://www.cccp-project.net/

You might be able to get the Video Acceleration to work using that and adding the ATI decoder in the External Codec area of MPC.

Worth a shot, eh?

I have media player 11, I ran the media player codec checker and all the codecs that I have are incompatible with it, WTF!

I guess I am just going to stay with the Power DVD that I have, it works well for my needs.

thanks for all the replies.

The "Enable hardware acceleration" is grayed out if a PowerDVD is playing a movie. Stop it, then go back to the menu. You can now enable the hardware acceleration.

Well, I may be a bit late, but would suggest the freeware program VideoLAN for playing DVDs. It does a great job, especially for scaling and cropping movies to fit a widescreen display. I like it a lot better than any PowerDVD versions I've ever used.
