No ghosting monitor...does it exist?

I need a new monitor, and as the title said...I want to know if a non-ghosting model exists.

I currently own a Dell XPS 17 laptop which suffers from heavy ghosting, atleast I think it's called that. When you move the mouse left/right quick, it develops a second mouse pointer which ends up following it.

My television has the same problem. I was playing Dead Island the other day, and when I went to the world map...the "target icon" was developing ghosting when I moved it up/down/left/right at a certain speed.

It's quite annoying and it's gotten to a point where I'm not sure what i'm seeing is something everyone sees. I rarely find threads about it, so it's either a) I'm very unlucky when buying stuff or b) I suffer from OCD

I'm assembling a new PC right now, but I have no clue what to do. I'm just too scared I'll spend another 200$ on a monitor with the same problem. I've considered 120hz, but apparently it causes stuttering on 80-90 fps etc..

They're called CRTs

CRTs have phosphors. Phosphors stay illuminated for a split second after they're not getting illuminated. I've seen more mouse trails on CRTs than on any LCDs I've had!

Try getting a 120Hz designed-for-3D monitor. If a monitor designed for 3D with LCD glasses had mouse trails, the 3D would look awful!

I feel for ya.

Years ago I paid $550 (edit: I lied it was $449) for a 19" ViewSonic monitor that was highly rated but slow. I HATED it. The ghosting very noticeable playing high contrast games like FEAR.

If your eyes are "faster" than normal maybe you see the same type of thing on all monitors? That must suck! I mean I really hated that slow monitor. Everyone else raved about how good it was but I hated it.

You might need to go to a brick and mortar store and pick a monitor that way, if you can find one you like.

They publish specs but they are all but meaningless.

I game on my plasma TV, and I see no ghosting there.

But 51" might be a bit much for your desktop

I'm using a 22" LG TN panel that's four or five years old, and I've had no complaints about it.

Maybe I'm just not as sensitive to it, but I've seen older monitors that ghost, and my current one doesn't do it.

Edit: And I recognize that anecdotal "My monitor doesn't ghost" stories aren't particularly helpful in and of themselves. I'm also saying I haven't seen much complaining about this issue in general in years. Head over to the Video and Monitors section of the forum and do a little research. At least when I was buying my monitor they had pretty thorough analyses of some models, and it was easy to find ones that were considered good for high-action stuff like movies and gaming.

All LCDs ghost. Even the so called 2ms 120Hz monitors show ghosting trails. LCDs fundamentally can't switch to the right colours faster than 25ms, its simply a limitation of the technology. With a frame being 16ms or at 120Hz 8ms that time looks positively huge.

Saying that some monitors are much better at appearing to speed that up using overshoot and http://tftcentral.co.uk/ is one of the best review sites for showing the best and worst of the ghosting of monitors. But you wont find an LCD that doesn't ghost at all, and its highly likely we'll be stuck with ghosting until OLED becomes viable.

You could get a plasma but then the minimum size they come in is 32" and the DPI would be very low as it would only be 1080p. It'll also be quite expensive compared to a monitor and consume about 8x the power. Neitherless plasmas don't ghost but they have other picture issues that may irritate you and it might suffer from burn in or picture shimmer.

There are no perfect monitors, just trade offs.

I love those things. They do suffer from some picture defects but none of the kind that annoy me. They are big, bright and fast enough that I don't see ghosting (which is not to say that others will have the same experience). They don't look good with a dark background because the display is not uniformly lit but they look fine with any normal display on the screen.

Got my first one years ago and it seemed so huge. Now they seem normal and smaller screens seem, well, small.
