Funny that people would propose utter rape of New Mexico's heritage. Welcome to a bilingual area. It is like in Quebec. Sure, everyone learns two languages, but sometimes speakers neglect one of them and just use one language.
Really, as much as illegals are a problem, the racists do come out of the woodwork and wouldn't mind crunching legals who speak Spanish.
What heritage would that be? New Mexico was by and large a barren wasteland when its land became a territory of the United States (to some extent it still is ). The growing Spanish-speaking population in New Mexico is certainly due more to illegal immigration than any old families that have spoken Spanish for several generations.
EDIT: lol, might have spoken too soon. I knew that New Mexico printed its forms in both English and Spanish but I thought that was a recent development; however, it looks like that may have been a part of its constitution since the beginning. Having difficulty finding the specifics of the amendments to their constitution but I may be wrong when it comes to heritage. Regardless, the point on growing Spanish-speaking populations and illegal immigration is still valid afaik.
EDIT #2: OK, their original constitution definitely protects and supports Spanish speakers. I don't think that nullifies the point in the op though.
