American history classes really need to spend a day or two on the history of the southwest. It is quite possible to grow up in rural or small town New Mexico and rarely if ever need to speak english.

Except that English is... well... kinda a required course in all american schooling. Not saying it produces perfect English speakers - however, you wouldn't come out of grades K-12 with "No hablo Ingles".

Unless you can somehow explain to me how someone can be born here in the USA and make it through pre-school, Kindergarten, and grades 1-12 without learning an ounce of English... I think it's safe to say that in the OPs case this was an immigrant :awe:

I see plenty of students in college who are unable to read, write or, speak English beyond a 2nd grade level yet graduated from our fine American schools.

Spanish class was part of fifth and sixth grade in Santa Fe but I don't remember much of it. Whenever the teacher had been sick or busy with Christmas shopping and didn't have a lesson plan ready she would get out the lyric sheets and the Ritchie Valens record and we would sing along to "La Bamba".

No. I'm in the USA, not Mexico.
If you're going to live and work here, learn the language here. I don't expect you to get it perfect because I know it is hard to learn a foreign language, but after a few years you should have enough figured out to at least communicate reasonably enough.
