No incoming TCP traffic on local ports (ghetto network)

Ok, I'm on a LAN in my apartment complex and my landlord is pretty lame. Basically, no one can connect to any TCP port that I open. I have tried most common ports (80, 21, 23, 113, 1080, etc etc) with no luck, as well as strange ports like 5625 or something and nothing/no one can connect to me. This is kinda cool for security reasons but its sucks for obvious reasons. What I would at least like to do is get on IRC (efnet specifically), but I don't think any efnet servers allow you to connect without identd running (which it is, just the server can't connect to me through port 113 because of the stupid network restrictions). Anyone know of anything I can do other than buy a shell and setup an irc bounce? I would like to not have to spend any money to get around this. Any suggestions appreciated...

Other than a bnc? How about buy a shell and irc directly from there? Or try one of the few servers that dont require ident. Or find an open Wingate. Or find an open SOCKS proxy.

Very good. Be responsible for THOUSANDS of dollars worth of damage because you cant get on irc without paying something. boohoo. Just like all the script kiddiots, dont have any respect.

Did your landlord or a 3rd part setup the firewall? You could try a little 'social engineering'... call him up pretending to be a tech from your ISP or perhaps a technician from the company that installed the cabling. Explain that you need a particular port(s) opened in order to do some 'maintenance' or 'line improvements'. See how far that takes you... have you tried access the router directly via telnet to see if there's a PW set? Just my 2cents :Q

Or just ask him to open port 113. Seriously, there is no reason to break the law here like others have suggested. I hope these two intellectual *IDIOTS* learn some respect and stop trying to crack into other people's networks (or out of them). fscking kids.

I think what happened was that many people were complaining of poor internet speeds so they blocked all incoming ports which pretty much kills all file sharing systems (gnutella, morpheus, etc) and thus freeing up a lot of bandwidth. So I guess the landlord spoke with the 3rd party company provides the internet access and that was the solution they came up with.

And yes, the router is pretty secure.

I could try calling up the company providing the access and try to get them to open a port up for me, but I'm just not too optimistic they would go out of their way to do a favor for me considering the service is locked into the lease with my apartment and they aren't threatened by losing a customer... I guess its worth a try though...

er, typically the inbound and outbound lines are different, in that I mean shutting down outbound traffic doesnt give you more download bandwidth. Not shure about cable but DSL and trunk lines have different streams.

I dont know you, so yes, I think you would actually do that. I expect the worst out of people, and your post definitely brought that forth.

Another question... anyone know of any file sharing programs (gnutella, morpheus, etc) that you can use without needing an incoming port open? I thought that it wouldn't make much of a difference I just wouldn't be able to send other people files (I felt like such a leech), however, no file sharing service works. The only service I can even connect to is filetopia, but once I'm connected I can't connect to anyone. I've also tried a few programs that use random ports without any luck either. Any ideas?
