Some of my fondest memories are of having lan parties and playing warcraft3 / diablo 2. Its simply more fun to have a group of friends over for the weekend all playing the same game together in the same room. Yes you can still play together over the internet and all but its more fun playing lan in some cases and yes you COULD still play together online but then the server could lagg since its not using your lan and also you would have to make it private and thats just annoying.
So lets recapp. Activision merged with blizzard, started calling the shots, and now is trying to make money in every single avenue possible. I for one decided not to buy Starcraft 2 once they announced that they werent going to release a finnished product and instead milk 150 for the normal game in 3 installments and then expansions on top of that. Now they are also taking away the ability to have a lan game with my friends without going online? I swear they are rediculous.
Im willing to bet money that the first thing that will be said about my argument is that blizzard said they couldnt possibly fit the game into one installment without breaking it up. I call BS. They could easily fit the game into multiple DVD's but instead want to play the hype game and milk the franchise for everything they can while at the same time buying themselves more time to finnish the product.

This is likely an anti-piracy maneuver. I suppose Hamachi has gotten too popular.
BTW, if the game is still peer to peer but just uses battle.net for authentication purposes, it could still have good performance over a LAN and not make much use of an Internet connection.
Also, the 3 game thing blizzard is doing may be because it sounds like multiplayer and singleplayer will be radically different games, with different units and stats between the two. If that's the case, and the main starcraft 2 is the multiplayer meat and bones, look for the expansions to bomb.

I am getting older but do people really get together and play lan games anymore? The reason we did it back in the day was because internet sucked a donkeys ass though a 56Kbps or slower connection. It was worth getting together to play SC1 or other games like that. Now a days the vast majority of gamers have 1.5+Mbps lines hooked right to their homes and can use ventrillo or even a cell phone to talk.

There is this thing, it's called social interaction.
Computer gaming and social interaction, funny
You can still do it via a phone or vent.

... How many LAN parties exist that don't have any internet at all? ...
I don't see the big deal.
We throw at least one every week in the summer, so this pretty much axes any potential for me and my friends to buy it.
And you can't do this at a friend's house with internet?

At first I was outraged, but not anymore. It was pretty much a requirement for starcraft since there were always those stupid problems with multiple people trying to play on b.net from one connection. That has been fixed though since warcraft 3, so I don't really care.

Ok, so you're telling me we should send all connections out to battle.net then back instead of across a single switch? I would just call that plain idiotic.

You completely cut off your computers from the internet when you have a LAN party? Why?

We have the parties in a place that has no internet connection. There's a lot of places in this country that don't have access to broadband.

It is especially true when you need a place that is big enough to holdt lots of people.
I know someone that had a LAN party in a barn about 5 miles from the nearest house.

Expansions will add new units. I bet on it
Also I doubt, besides heroes and special units, campaign will be different than singleplayer. I really doubt it.
Anyone know if they are including a campaign editor in SC2?

Of course it's less efficient. But people claiming that they're not going to buy the game because of lack of LAN support is dumber. Like Beev said, how many people who are into hosting lan parties don't have an internet connection? In a RTS, no one's going to lose a match because their ping went from 5 ms to 100 ms.
