Keep in mind also - moving to Battle.net means that you probably (likely) will not be able to sell your copy of the game(s) once you've had enough.

Who sold their copy of Starcraft? I would like to ask what the hell is wrong with them.

I hope you can register SC2 like you can with Starcraft and Diablo II. I swear, I've bought both of those games at least 4 times.

Have they actually confirmed this? I wouldn't be as annoyed if they did. Until they have confirmed it, it is MUCH more likely that they have the content of one regular size game just split up into three 1/3rd parts much like EA does.

They've said that each race will have 26-30 missions.

Edit:
http://www.starcraft2.com/faq.xml
How long is each of the campaigns?
--StarCraft II's terran campaign will consist of approximately 26 to 30 missions, and each expansion set will include a similar number of missions. This means that the complete StarCraft II Trilogy will include as many as 90 single-player missions. This allows us to create a truly epic story experience with a great variety of unique missions and gameplay types.

I really hope this is true. IF so i will buy it. I havent gone to a lan in years. BUT i hope its not a trend. In the next Warcraft game (if there ever is one) i hope htey add it. me and my wife play WC 2 and 3 over lan all the time.

if i hear the majority say it took them 5-8 hours to finish the game then i will pass. games are getting so fucking short its silly.

I spent about 15m on the Starcraft II website yesterday. I opted in for betas, so we'll see...

Doesn't Blizz realize that they will most likely create more pirates running hacked servers by taking LAN out than by leaving LAN play in? Quite honestly I have a feeling that a lot of my friends may become part of the hacking community if Blizz doesn't support LAN just so they can play without having to be online. By removing LAN play they are not reducing piracy, but in fact creating even more pirates.

lol. I agree with that guy.

Not sure what this person means by "hacking community", but I like the point he makes.

I see it this way, the more invasive DRM gets, the more legitimate customers are inconvenienced. The more legit customers that are inconvenienced, the more the legit customers go looking for fixes. Some of the honest ones stay honest while downloading the cracks, some just get fed up with the status quo and quit buying, and some just start pirating everything with DRM that goes too far. Also, as DRM gets more invasive, the ones already downloading the cracks get better at it and point others in the direction of the fixes. They also eventually go to college with a bad taste in their mouth against DRM, and come out as the next generation of crackers and hackers of software and hardware. The industry, in a pointless and fruitless attempt and curbing piracy, will just end up inadvertently teaching and motivating the next generation of pirates who will be worse than they are now.

The "I won't buy this game now!" and "This will create more piracy!" people are dumb.

So you buy things that don't meet your needs? 95% of my time with Stracraft was playing with the guys at work over the LAN we setup. Why should I waste my money when the one thing I loved about the game is gone?

Since you appear to have money to burn, you can buy it for me. PM me when it's released, and I'll tell you where to send it.

QFT. Some of us have friends we play with in real life

I will be going to a LAN party with lots of old friends there on the 25th of July. We are some of the dwindling few who still do this. It is sad that this is so.

Of course, but there has to be a balance between profit and customer satisfaction.

If they don't satisfy their customers for long enough, they're not a company for very much longer either.

At a LAN, you can straight assault the a-hole who's running the hacks/cheats. I once saw a picture of a CS player who was caught using an aim-bot at a LAN. The other players literally duck taped him to a wall of the gymnasium they were playing in.

There's that oldschool video of some guy getting caught cheating at a LAN and they literally toss him out and then toss his computer out with him (smashing it to bits in the process). Pretty sure it was fake, but entertaining.

I don't get your point. I bought the game 4 times because I kept losing my discs/cd keys. If I had a working version of Starcraft, I wouldn't sell it.

Man, I'd start keeping a .txt file with all your serials if you're that bad with misplacing discs and key codes. Make a backup of the discs onto some of your unused hard drive space while you're at it too.

For Blizzard games, you can now register your key codes with the Battle.net webpage and get downloadable images of your games too.

Funnily, I recently started doing both of those things. I registered my copy of SC/Broodwar as well as my two D2 copies on battle.net.

I also made a .txt file with most of my cd keys.

There are ways to obtain new CD-keys from blizzard in the event that you lose it. I obtained a D2 LOD key after it peeled off the case and got lost by mailing the manual to them. They sent my manual back with a new case + key. I believe it cost me $10 plus the cost of postage.

I tried to do the beta-opt in, but I have no idea what e-mail address I may have associated with my battle.net account. And if I didn't, when I try to put an e-mail into it via the StarCraft account options page, it won't let me .

... How many LAN parties exist that don't have any internet at all? ...

I don't see the big deal.

We throw at least one every week in the summer, so this pretty much axes any potential for me and my friends to buy it.

And you can't do this at a friend's house with internet?

It's just a matter of common sense. Why make your LAN party dependent on a network you have no control over? Just because Bnet is down or laggy, I can't play a game with my roommate?

So, all the would-be LAN games will now have to be handled over bnet. Is that extra traffic something Blizzard wants?

I can honestly say, I've owned SC since 98, and I've spent much more time playing over LAN than over Bnet or otherwise over the internet.

EDIT: Sorry for replying to something so early on in the thread.

You ought to look for a Blizzcon '08 beta key code... that's a guaranteed entry into it. I have mine under lock, guard and 24 hour surveillance!

I can see EA taking advantage of the situation by renaming Red Alert 3 to C&C Red Alert 3: It has Lan

That makes no sense. LAN encouraged people to actually go out, meet up, and play together. Now, everyone will just sit at their own home alone and play over the internet with each other.

Removing the LAN feature completely basically rids any chance of a game being cracked and played via LAN since that is no longer a play option. Only possibility I would see is somehow creating a "free" internet server program that hacked copies could somehow connect to a small LAN-type lobby. Possibly something like Hamachi which creates VPN's over the internet for LAN-type play of any game without authentication.

The really lame thing about this is that Blizzard is being positioned as Single Player friendly with an extensive single player campaign but if you have any intent whatsoever of playing it multilayer, an internet connection (Broadband of course) would be required.

As long as I have a flawless connection when playing with 8 players at my house on a cable broadband, I will be ok with this. Any real LAN party should have a broadband connection anyways. I am sick of people showing up with pirated versions of good solid games that I have legitimately anyways. I just hope that Blizzard does not end up requiring ownership of all three games for the full Multilayer experience!

Hmm... MAYBEEEEEEE... but only until they crack the netcode, and Reinstate Lan play. Hamachi,, etc etc.

Having LAN parties DOESN'T count as going out. Riding a bike is going out... Taking a girl to the movies is going out. Playing video games with friends is not going out, even if it means having to come out of your house to meet up with friends to play games WHILE INDOORS.

Off course, I gotta admit that having a LAN party for a gamer with no life, and seeing other people once in a while is a hell of a lot better than playing with yourself all day. (not referring to anyone in particular off course)
