Yeah, same here. Went from 2400 bps to 14400 -- seeing the whole page of the BBS come up at once was amazing, because at 2400 you just get one line at a time.

Most phone lines any BBS around me had was just 2.

Did you play BRE or Usurper? Awesome games, there.

I remember being absolutely obsessed with Sierra and The Imagination Network back then. I was too young to afford it, parents wouldn't bother with it, especially since it would have been a long distance call. That was the only thing I wanted to do though... to wander around and play Shadow of Yserbius with friends would have been fucking sweet.

Did you ever play The Realm? World's first graphical MMORPG.

Occasionally, though I was mostly into Legend of the Red Dragon. Also Planets (less famous but by the same guy that did LORD). I also remember various "Food Fight" door games. There was one where you could take a break from food fighting to go rob a bank or something, which was odd.

I played that for about a month until my parents got the first phone bill. Ended pretty quick after that. Agreed it was damn awesome.

I think I played a demo or something, but not really. After my BBS days ended I played some MUDs for awhile, but didn't get into graphical MMOs until much later.

I remember our first 2400 baud modem. When we finally got 28.8k it was fucking amazing. that was around the same time for me too. I absolutely loved it...even went for a few of the gatherings locally. Odd people on the BBSs... I remember dialing the same numbers over and over waiting for a line to open up. We had a local BBS that had at one point 8 phone lines. It was amazing to chat with 7 other people at the same goddamn time.

I used Telix. ZMODEM was the shit.

Geez, you crazy kids... I remember thinking our 300 baud modem was cool, and then being amazed at how fast 1200 baud was. This was, of course, right around the same time we were thinking that we'd never, ever fill our new 10MB harddrive.

A little hint for people who don't enjoy reddit because of the layout and how it functions

RES (reddit enhancement suite)
HoverZoom

With those two installed redditing is much easier

never been to reddit. I guess at some point I just decided subconsciously that it was too late for me to ever have interest in it and so I guess I hope it just goes away before I ever feel like I'm missing something. Not even sure what it is. I've gone to wiki for it before but I guess I forgot. I think a lot of people who like to show pictures of old man's junk is there perhaps, maybe it's like 4chan which I also don't go to but believe it consists of mainly 17 year olds who are obsessed with anime and pornography. If I'm wrong about any of this I honestly do not care

I wish that we had the occasional celebrity poster here like Reddit.

Maybe we can get Bill Gates to post here, so we can make fun of his avatar and ask him for free iPods

I read that the Demographic of a Redditor is:
Under 25
Male
Lives at Home
Makes under $35K a year

Reddit is entertaining but very little substance. I lurk there and post here.

Well here at ATOT its:
20-30ish
Male
Lives in many multi-million dollar mansions on overlooking the ocean.
Average income of $2,000,000 a year.

I go on Reddit for the random stuff that people might post there. ATOT still has a smaller and closer "community" if you want to call it that.

There are probably still a lot of smart, creative, and/or talented people on there. Lots of dipshits, yeah...but that's anywhere.

Current 20-30 year olds are a pretty disenfranchised generation...there's a reason a lot live at home and make shit for money. We live in a world of decreasing opportunity and a general increasing shittiness. If you're not already 'in' it can be pretty difficult to make anything of yourself...the 'successful' ones are, IMO, largely the ones who can simply take the abuse. As in, go to college, obtain a shitty job, and keep doing it well despite being treated like shit.

ATOT is as far as I go with online forums, and I really only continue to frequent here because I like viewing the tech forums and the news/reviews on the main site.

I hate groupthink, and almost anywhere else it seems to be that active posters turn practically into unthinking drivel bots.

Plus, I don't actively care about what's popular online, with the exception of technology. Nowadays I'm looking to be informed rather than entertained.

I'm with ya on the groupthink thing. It seriously is the biggest problem, IMO, with forums and general online communication. The "know-it-all armchair expert" and groupthink attitudes really turn me off to a lot of places. I post here just cause I've been here so long and I just like it here, and once in a great while at DefensiveCarry.com. I have an account at ar15.com and have posted a few times there, but guess why I haven't been back there in months? Hmmmmm...

I'm far too lazy to install things.

I've been to reddit maybe three times. Each time I couldn't figure out how the place was organized and it just looked like gibberish on the screen. After about 15 seconds I left each time.

I did too for the first time back in 2008, going back later I was still a bit put off by the layout, however after 2 days and installing RES (the most important add on) I was stuck :\

I use reddit as a news source more than anything. The comments tend to irritate me, but there's some quality in the technical subs.

I used to hit BBSes in the early to mid 80s on a 300 baud Vicmodem. I can still remember my awe when using a 1200 baud modem the first time!
