Normally if I download a demo and get corrupted files ,I go to a different site for the redownload.

i had this issue with the demo so i decided to try the trial of winzip instead of the built in windows utility.

it worked.

The problem I see with Bioshock is if somebody is not connected to the net and buys a retail copy being this is a single player game ie......

3.1 Installer Issues
The BioShock installer will automatically patch to the latest version of the BioShock game application as part of the install process. YOU MUST BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET IN ORDER TO INSTALL THE GAME.

So in that situation above you are buggered.

Also the net connection activation message they have about the game is very small and at the back of the case below the specs, personally this should be in giant letters on the front,I guess they did not want to hurt their sales.

On top of that situation, the activation servers went down today for a bit so people couldn't play the game.

Plus, what happens in ~10 years or whenever they shut down the servers? They can't possibly think they'll run the servers for decades.

It says the 'net is required on it right on the box .

So to buy the game, we load up steam, go to my store, and just put in your cc# info, and it will download the full retail game for you?

FYI I'm holding the tin boxed version of Bioshock(UK version) and nothing on the front about net connection, just very small fine print on the back of the tin case below specs part, easy to miss.

Right, but it's the idea that you have to have internet access to play a single player game. I didn't have internet access when I lived at my parent's house, but I still had a kickass gaming comp and always bought games.

I think the first post should be updated with the issues Dan Stapleton, Senior Associate Editor if PCGamer had when he ran into the SecuROM activation after installing and uninstalling the game on two work computers. From www.pcgamer.com on the front page:

8/22/07 - DRMShock

By Dan Stapleton, Senior Associate Editor

Yesterday began as a joyous day. By the whim of the mailroom gods, my copy of BioShock was the first to arrive at my desk. After I finished dancing around the room rubbing it in everyone's face, we needed to install it on a DX9 and a DX10 machine to compare.

"But wait," I said. "This product requires activation. What if, by installing it here, I cripple my copy and am unable to play from home? "So Greg called the 2K support line and talked to a support rep, who told him that it would be fine as long as we uninstalled the game before installing it on another machine. Ok, that's fine... a little annoying considering the game also has a DVD check to make sure the disc is in the drive, but I can handle that.

So we installed on one machine, then uninstalled and installed on another with no problems. So far, so good. I got in about an hour of play time, but I do the majority of my game playing at home, where I've got my heavy-duty gaming rig set up, so I was really looking forward to bringing it home with me. I uninstalled the game from my work machine and happily headed home...but when I got there and went to activate, I was stopped dead by a failure message that informed me I'd installed with this code one time too many. What... the... $%~&!

Ok, still not a disaster. I've had this happen with Windows XP before?all I have to do is call the number in the manual, read off the reactivation request code supplied by the activation wizard, and they'll give me an unlock code. Well, not so simple in this case?the support number for the US listed in the manual didn't work, giving me a "We cannot connect your call at this time" message. So I called the Canadian number, which went through. After four minutes on hold, I was told that the only way they'd unlock it is if I take a photo of the disc and the manual and email it to them. Wow? even Microsoft doesn?t make you do that.

Having now jumped through all their hoops hours ago, I?m currently waiting for 2K to get around to allowing me to play my legitimate copy of the game on the system of my choosing. Meanwhile, the pirates who cracked Windows Vista?s activation in a matter of days are already at work on the game, and I sincerely doubt that the BioShock copy protection wall will still be standing a week from today. And while those pirates play their ill-gotten games without a care, those of us who came by our copies legally will have to put up with draconian obstacles that will then serve no purpose whatsoever. Well done 2K, well done indeed.

8/23/07 - DRMShock, Day 2

By Dan Stapleton, Senior Associate Editor

It's now been more than 24 hours since I sent 2K tech support a photo of my BioShock disc and manual, and I have yet to hear from them about my code being reactivated. Luckily I work in a magical computer game wonderland, and there happened to be an extra copy here that I was able to "appropriate," (sorry about that, contest winner*) and I played the hell out of it last night and it rocks. But in the real world I would be really, really pissed off right now. To be fair, of course, in the real world I wouldn't have installed the game on three systems already, but still.

So what they tell you about the activation keys working after uninstalls is not true.

If you get activation problems check your " I" and "1 " also " 0" and "O" easy to mix up.

The activation server can get overloaded(was earlier today) so took some people a few trys even with correctly entered activation keys so keep trying if that happens or wait awhile.

Yeah, hopefully it is just the enormous number of gamers involved holding things up, and it'll settle down in a few days, or they'll get enough servers up to handle the load. If not, this is going to be a FUBAR fiasco.

Well, I'm downloading it off of STEAM right now. I haven't had a demo excite me this much in a very long time. I really don't forsee any problems with the DRM for myself, even though i don't like it.

I'm playing on Vista 64 just fine. Clean install, no problems.

Mem, you're right about those O's and 0's, 1's and I's in the activation code...

I'm having the no sound issue. It's really frustrating. I can't even get past the first 20 seconds of the game because there's no sound.

If you are on Vista, have you tried the XP SP2 compatibility mode? If not, try to right click on the game icon and change the compatibility mode under properties to XP SP2. If you are on XP then bump for more help ^
