Normally if I download a demo and get corrupted files ,I go to a different site for the redownload.

i had this issue with the demo so i decided to try the trial of winzip instead of the built in windows utility.

it worked.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I did try that, but it still said it was corrupted... I don't know, but I have a hard time believing that the file is corrupted when I downloaded it from three different servers. :-(

I know that a standard zip fle size has a maximum of like 2gb, I think... This is pretty darn close to it. The volume that I am saving the zip onto is a USB2.0 FAT32 500GB drive. I don't think that would be a problem, but I guess you never know.

Sort of frustrating to download the demo three times and have it still reported as a corrupt zip. :-(

Did you try a torrent or a newsgroup? I had absolutely no problems getting it from a newsgroup.

UPDATES ON SECUROM?, PC ACTIVATION, AND A TECHNICAL FAQ
August 23, 2007
We have been reading and listening to your frustrations over SecuROM, PC activation problems, and technical support issues since BioShock launched on Tuesday, and we've devised a plan to help.

Starting immediately, we will be upping the activation count to a 5 by 5 plan. We will be raising the maximum amount of computers a user can have BioShock installed on simultaneously from 2 to 5, and allowing a user to reinstall BioShock on each of those computers from 3 times to 5 times. Also, we have in the works a revoke tool which you will be able to run on your machine if you want to free up that key and move it to to another computer (this works very much like Steam or iTunes system). We are also working with SecuROM and 2K customer service, so that when you do need to call in support problems, you get answers to your questions faster, without much waiting or being bounced around. SecuROM has been given much more autonomy to help fix your problems quickly and effectively. I am personally sorry for anyone who got bounced around in the past couple days (I even think I contributed to this problem) and we're going to make sure that does not happen in the future.

As for other technical issues, we are bringing on a team of tech support that will be on the 2K forums 24/7 to help people resolve their technical issues. Our QA guys are in the offices and on the forums, too, reproducing issues and looking for workarounds and compiling information that they can put towards making you a patch and updating the knowledge base.

Also, we are aware that our activation server went down last night, stopping some of you from finishing your installs. The server is up and running now and we have corrected the problem that caused that crash.

Finally, we have released a FAQ, which you can view in full below (and will also be posted on the 2K Forums in the Technical Support area) that will help clear up a lot of questions and misinformation that has been floating around about SecuROM and PC activation.

And as for widescreen, we also want to say we completely understand a user's desire to augment their FOV. BioShock is a harrowing experience, but we don't want anyone to feel limited (or motion sick!). So we are in the process of working on an official PC patch to give widescreen PC users a choice to expand their horizontal FOV, and are investigating creating a similar update for the 360.

And finally, I want to personally congratulate Racer_S from the Widescreen Gaming Forums, and his awesome user patch to expand the widescreen FOV in BioShock. I'm currently tracking him down via email, but hopefully, he'll accept my gratitude, and maybe an Nvidia 8800 to boot.

Also note the update re: tech support numbers - the ones in the printed manual are wrong.

CORRECT SUPPORT NUMBERS FOR BIOSHOCK
August 23, 2007
It has come to my attention that the support phone numbers were incorrectly printed in the BioShock manual. If you encounter an issue with BioShock, please refer to these numbers for all your support needs:

US Support
Phone: 1-866-219-9839
Email: usa@take2support.com

Canadian Support Phone: 1-800-638-0127
Email: canada@take2support.com

Congrats to Racer_S on scoring an 8800 for his awesome bit of work.

I find my attitude towards these guys are changing... This is a great response! It looks like I will definately consider this game as soon as these issues are water under the bridge.

Are you using a download manager? sometimes that can cause problems

It could be comcast trying to get me back for downgrading my internet service from 8mb to 6mb! Just wasn't worth the extra $15...

I downloaded from Fileplanet (I have a subscription) and also from Gamershell (One of my fav download sites). I did not try a torrent, or a newsgroup. Bittorrent pounds my router so hard it sometimes shuts down. Yeah, I know... Crappy router.

Edit * Pont, Nope, I do not use any download manager programs. Also, I was able to download two-worlds demo (900mb) and that worked fine. I also downloaded a few other demos within the last week that were about 1GB and they worked fine too. Seems really strange... Maybe bad luck? I am going to try saving it to my internal hard drive next, to see if that makes a difference.

-edit xinput1_3.dll with a hex editor and replace the "TraceMessage" with "GetUserNameA"

demo works for me on w2k. I'm not overly impressed with the gameplay, but the footage at the end looks like there's a bit of a learning curve. Too much foraging for health and Adam for my tastes. I'll assume it looks much better in DX10.
Thanks! I believe this is the exact same workaround as for Jade Empire (another 2K effort).

bleh, I had a longer reply about some of these comments and some personal gameplay comments but it seems to have been eaten by he AT beast. Here's a couple snippets till I retype it later.

Don't bother arguing with Aikouka, he's still claims Quake 3 was the start of the FPS generation (I guess like in a certain movie series he decided it started in the middle vice at, say I or II not to mention several other namesake titles).

I was fairly certain there'd be some movement on the copy protection front when TV media was blasting it on the day of release with web/magazine following shortly thereafter. That they are also looking into correcting the widescreen clip, along with being very desired, is actually a fairly positive move given the short time of the game being live.

Several of the out of the box reviews were discussing that the storyline gameplay was good enough that it could be a top contender for game of the year even lacking a multiplayer aspect; if 2k does a real good job of addressing these problems it can help that position. If not we may see a game flop for reasons over than the actual gameplay.

When I played the demo, there is a scene that a Big Daddy wastes one 'monster' and throws its body through a window...

I've played System Shock 2 enough times to see very, very striking movement/sound resemblance to Rumbler from SS2.
Of course the Bid Daddy graphically looks much more complex, etc. , but I bet that it must be something in it...

Anyone cares to comment?

Well, I downloaded the demo for the fourth time from FP, was getting 600k/sec and completed before the hour was complete. I saved it to my internal drive and tried to open it with winzip (the new version), it told me "This Zip Appears to be corrupt"... Grrr! Damn it!

You know what? I have steam... I'll probably load that up and download the demo.

I wasn't specific enough as you would've had to read back on the first page, but I'm pointing out that people are complaining about having to have the Internet to authorize the game... not the game's authorization rules. Having to have an active Internet connection was known before the game was released and is also on the box, hence why I say it should not be a complaint. When should people not be accountable for their own actions or lack thereof? I have no problem with people complaining about the number of times you can install, etc. This was not listed beforehand or even on the box, so that is a valid complaint as a restriction such as this only hurts those that actually pay for the game.

Game restrictions are similar to locks on doors, you only stop the honest from getting in and if they really want in, they'll get in. Game protection may've been a viable option before the Internet really got big where you can easily find a lot of things on it (including game cracks), but now you can probably go to google and search up "bioshock game crack" and find it (note that I have no idea if that search does work, it's just a guess ).

You know what, I've had it up to here *holds hand above head* with you. You're completely off-base with the comment over where I think FPS games started (although I believe it's safe to say, it was with iD... whom made Q3 ). I said I was going about 10 years back and only listing a handful of games. We won't even get into the fact that you had a completely speculatory argument in that thread that you couldn't even back up. I even brought up a counterpoint that posed a real life situation where it did not follow what you said would happen, but you IGNORED IT. Go and sip the kool aid some more, buddy... I think your sugar's running a bit low.

Since everything not related to the DRM stuff seems to be drowned in DRM stuff, I'll ask again...

I don't quite understand EVE and your plasmid powers...you have your life bar at the top and then you have an EVE bar, right? When this gets low/empty, you hit f1 to refill it, right? but it looks like this just reinjects your lightning plasmid.

if i was using the fire plasmid, would i just show me reinjecting another fire plasmid or what? i don't quite understand that part. the EVE and plasmid stuff is confusing me.

What happened was that I ran out of EVE (I guess) and I couldn't find a key to refill it using the EVE injectors i found lying around. Eventually it told me i couldn't carry any morwe but I had no idea how to replensih my EVE. After hitting several button I tried F1 and that when it reinjected the lightning plasmid thing.

Just think of EVE as ammo. You run out, you reload. Whether its with the lighting plasmid, or later on when you get others. You don't need to hit F1, though that works. You can just try to fire it off again and it will replenish it (assuming you have one available)

One thing that disappoints me is that I sometimes will prefer to reload before I run out and really the only way to handle that is to use up the rest of your Eve. It wouldn't be so bad, but I had some weird hair-trigger issues in the PC demo (I haven't played the full version yet, I want to crack it first to avoid the auth issues) where I would press the LMB once and I swear it fired two lightning bolts at once (when using the lightning bolt plasmid of course). But having full Eve when you're fighting splicer waves would be helpful... similar to the end of the demo with the 4 or so groups of Splicers that you simply electrocute the water to kill.

Bioshock wikipedia

"Similarities to System Shock series
According to the developers, Bioshock is a spiritual successor to the System Shock games, and was developed by former developers of that series. Levine pointed out many similarities during his narration of a video initially screened for the press at E3 2006:[20] There are several comparable game play elements: "Plasmids" serve the same function as Psionic Abilities from System Shock 2; the player needs to deal with security cameras, turrets, and drones with the abilities to hack these; ammo conservation is stressed as "a key gameplay feature", and audio recordings serve as the same storytelling device that email logs did.[20] The "ghosts" from System Shock 2, phantom images who replay tragic incidents in the places they occurred, also exist in BioShock, as do modifiable weapons with multiple ammunition types."

Hitting R in the PC version will "Reload" you with Eve if you have your Plasmid equipped, just like it will reload your current weapon that is equipped.

f1 is your first plasmid. You just have to hit R to reload EVE, but it's easier (and less wasteful) if you just stick to the auto-reload that happens when you run out.

Bioshock isn't as suspenseful (or scary as some may call it) as SS2. It's an excellent game judging by what I've seen so far, just not the messiah that some reviews seem to be claiming. Gameplay is more console-friendly than SS2, not surprisingly. I didn't like the instant-resurrection via the Vita-chamber, so I just reload whenever I die, problem solved.

Yeah I find myself reloading after death too, usually because I'm in a the middle of a huge firefight with either a big daddy or a couple security bots fighting for me.

Anyone else absolutely love the invisibility gene tonic?
