Just finished it. What a ride. I can easily put it up there with Stalker or higher; benefit of course is that this game knows when to end. Including reloads, I think I logged in about 25-30 hours total give or take 2 or 3 hours. Length was pretty good in that it was long enough that you weren't craving for more and yelling bs, but short enough that you didn't get tired of shooting or doing the same things over and over again.

Speaking of, the guns weren't bad, just stuck to the standard flame, "sniper", shotty" machine gun, melee and pistol formula. Most used was the shotgun; I like to keep it handy for close encounters... Too bad you had to buy most of your ammo. The machine/tommy gun shot a bit slow, and became near useless near the end. Flame thrower was nice, but doesn't even come close to touching the one in AvP 2. I found plasmids weren't as useful near the end. During the last few levels, I almost always had full Eve and full Eve boosters. Adam was extremely plentiful for me, and I got everything I wanted and more with quite a bit left over before I got to the last level. Even then, I mainly stuck to the cold/freeze plasmid, and only for cameras/turrets cause I didn't want to lose the drops from enemies. Ammo was also overflowing near the end. If it were a PC exclusive, I'd suggest an inventory system and make you choose between all the weapons. This would have made it harder.

Difficulty wasn't bad. I stuck to medium, which I always do for my first run through. The good supply of ammo and money helped a lot, especially the specialty rounds. Enemies were pretty run of the mill. Early on they were freaky, then they came pretty standard. Respawns were actually good in keeping the tension. The Big Daddies were, obviously, the best enemies and coolest.

The atmosphere deserves a lot of praise. The music and mood was very '50s. Just wish everything didn't look so "smushed". The main character seems to be rather short and stalky, yet he's the same height as everyone else. Textures were good in some places, ok in others. The water effects like flow, reflections and how they messed with your vision were great. The thing ran very well on my 2 year old machine at 1680x1050, all settings high with no vertical sync; barely noticed any tearing. It slowed down a bit in some areas, but not often enough to be too distracting.

Overall, as amazing as it is, I doubt I'd play it again anytime soon. It was great while it lasted with some very theatric sequences. One of the best so far this year.

As for the Ending. Spolier-ish.........

I got the bad man ending. It's a bit short for an ending, and doesn't really say all that much. Was expecting a bit more. At least they didn't run the effing credits though.

For those who finished the game: you had your chance.

BIGGER spoiler/BUG: did anyone else get a loud pop/static sound near the end of the "bad" ending? Played it twice, happened both times. Using EAX and X-fi.

Nice review Impy, I also got the bad ending, but did not have sound problems. My problem was the video chugged like in slow motion through the end cut scene. (really weird)

Possible Spoilers:
Just finished, I got the "Good Ending" I thought it was spectacular, but same as you, I found less and less use for plasmids by the end. I'm sure the passive plasmids really paid off tho.

Did anyone try using all those wrench plasmids? I thought it'd be interesting to try with the ones that make you silent and add elemental damage, like put em all on at once and own fools with a wrench... heh

I think I was expecting too much from the game,I was disappointed with Bioshock, from all the reviews I read the game was overrated IMHO,gaming hours was about 15-20 max for me and I did not rush the game.

Old classics like System Shock 2 were way better IMHO ,I know I should not be comparing the game but I would not put it in my top 10 favourites.

Stability was fine since I only had one crash near the end ,however there was about 5-6 times where the sound would cut out.

I'm left with mixed feelings about the game,I won't comment on the bad or good parts since that might be spoilers.I would say a good buy once its in the budget prices, now you may think I'm being rather harsh, but got to call it as I see and have played Bioshock, the game is not for everybody.Overall decent but caution recommended(due to sound problems, copy protection used, playing hours, fun factor).

Lets hope other games down the road ie..Fallout 3 live up to expectations.

This thread is becoming too spoiler-rific

I think I'll skip it until I finish the game.

wow 2 pages in and im already glad i bought the 360 version

got the game on release, popped it in, played and looked like a champ on my 40inch 1080p samsung LCD. completed it (admittedly on easy) and it was thoroughly entertaining, going to replay it on a harder setting.

i am not without woes though. about 2/3's in the game would crash whilst loading the next area. you finish the area by hopping into a bathosphere. anyway the disc would just spin down and the 360 would tell me to clean the disc and reset the console. no amount of cleaning would solve this. i eventually concluded that the disc was simply one that was not quite perfect. i exchanged the game the next day for a direct replacement and it worked fine right away

so that little hick up aside, its amazing...... no driver issues, the graphics are as good as most pc's can manage, its fluid and theres no drm bollocks to worry about.

I agree completely. The ending was particularly disappointing, the fight itself, which was cliche and all too easy. Overall, I liked STALKER better. Bioshock had zero suspense/scare for me, unlike SS2 and STALKER.

I wouldn't get your hopes too high for Fallout 3, either. Right now I'm playing Fallout Tactics, and it's great. I love the challenge of Tough Guy mode.

Oh yeah, other than the letdowns with the game itself, performance was absolutely flawless on my rig, not one crash, framerates staying above 40fps 99% of the time at 1600x1200 4xAA, everything at max.

Think we can point to "consolitis" for this. I agree System Shock 2 was way way better. The use of inventory systems alone in SS2 and Stalker, and the REAL free-form-ness alone overtake Bioshock. However, it was made for Xbox and PC, mainly the former, so as a wide-appeal, cash cow game, it was pretty good. Lucky for me, I didn't even know what Bioshock was until a week or so before release, so I had no expectations and was oblivious to the fact that it was made by System Shock people. There wasn't all that much suspense in Bioshock, you really felt like you were a "pawn" (ahem) throughout the game. It was also a pretty straight shooter with some RPG elements added. It probably plays a lot better on the 360 than on PC too. Despite this, I still liked it alot.

The passive plasmids were the best. They did way more for me than the "active" ones did. Overall, the self-defense ones helped, hacking ones were almost required if you wanted to keep your health; it was really pissing sometimes that certain hacking puzzles had no solution or had to be done one way or you ran out of pieces.

I agree as well. The story is not terribly engaging, it's highly linear, etc. I will say that it's uniqueness was very nice and it fun. It is absolutely overrated though (some places giving it 97/100 etc)

there were autohacking tools, although you did have to decide whether to use them or not before you actually saw the puzzle. most of them are just too easy. i usually save, see what kind of puzzle i'm up against and then either hack manually or use the auto tool.

I 4th it , it was slightly overrated . I had zero crashes, the game code is highly optimized. The game story was excellent until the last boss. I felt like I was playing on my Super Nintendo the way the last battle played out.

I also like Stalker better as far as the theme immersion went. I also think Stalker had better textures, bumpmaps and lighting. However the code needs more optimization compared to Bioshocks. Hopefully Stalker: Clear Sky will iron out some of these issues.

I actually liked the theme and the actual game of Bioshock better than HL2 though, but thats just MO..., of course.

Hey, when hacking it will never electrocute the player to death. So you can hack till you finish the puzzle and then use a health pack after you finished hacking.

big daddy bug?
i encountered my first big daddy in medical. it killed me. i spawned at a vita chamber back near the level exit. i tried to just exit but it said i didnt harvest a little sister so i went back to finish him off. i do but i cant find the little sister. then ANOTHER big daddy shows up. i kill him after he kills me a few times (i respawn at various chambers). still dont see little sister. then a THIRD big daddy shows up with little sister in tow. after finally taking this one down i save the sis and follow her running away. i snag a few pieces of ammo i missed the first time around and a FOURTH big daddy shows up so i just run and end the level. is this supposed to happen?? i pretty much used up all my ammo and money killing 3 of them and now im starting this new level pretty depleted.

No, I don't think it's a bug because they BD's are always cruising even with out lil sis'rs, even when the level is cleared.

Also I think the AI in this game while scripted is phenomenal.

Just stand back and watch BD's pass you by , Use the cloaking Plasmid and take research photos among other things.

you know you don't have to kill the big daddies, right?

they are completely neutral to you, even ones with little sisters. They only attack you if you attack them or the little sisters.

You're kidding me right?......... I must have wasted at least 10 health 'packs' throughout the game after screwing myself by screwing up a hack. Oh well.

As for autohacking tools, I picked them up as I went, but just used them randomly when I didn't feel like hacking, independent of the puzzle's difficulty. Think I hacked 95% of everything that was hackable up until the last few levels. After the turrets became useless, I just shot them with my Armor Piercing pistol ammo which I never used.

It was asked but not answered in this thread. But what happens when a little sister crawls into her hole? Is there anyway to get her back for harvesting?

yeah, just wait a bit and the big daddy comes back, bangs on the wall and helps her back out.

once I saw a BD put her in, and then bang on wall and take her out - that was weird.

Yea, i saw that a little after i posted. I asked because i killed a BD, but there was no little sister. I loaded an old save and saw her climb in the hole.

Another question, what is this about "research photos"? I see it on the load screen. Do you eventually find a camera? Or am i supposed to have one from the start? Im right at the beginning of Neptunes Bounty.

Edit: Also, do you have to "save" all the little sisters to get the "charm big daddy" tonic?

1 The camera comes later....
2 No the hypnotize tonic comes later past the halfway point.
