one of your scsi controllers? how many do you have?
Does it do this with any other scsi hdd?
Does it detect the scsi controller without the hdd?
Did you try ide?
Did you install the drivers for the 2940U2W? isn't this the non pnp one?
Did you go into the scsi bios and see if the hdd is detected?
What is your system?

thanks losty lets see if i can answer all the questions

i ahve 2 scsi controllers the 2940U2W is the one that is not working that other one is an adaptec UW (i dot remember the model number, but i have had no problems with it.)

i only have 1 scsi HDD, the other device is a CD-ROM, they are on seperate controllers to preserve the speed rates.

the HDD is detected in the bios, however, when you attempt a low level format of the HDD it say that there is a hardware error.

I am not sure what you mean, "did i try ide?" i can tell you that i have an ide RAID 0 array that has been workign without problems for 6 monthes though.

the 2940 will work if i have the CD ROM connected, it is only when i attach the HDD that it does not work. i dont think it is the drivers, however, i have heard that some HDD's are not compatible with certain controllers, i thought that the 2940 was new enough to prevent these conflicts however.

System Specs

KT7 RAID MB
Duron 600mmz (OC to 900) (9x10--fsb 100)
2 quantom 30gig IDE hdd's in raid 0
Matsumi 5X ide DVD drive
plextor 8x4x32 ide burner
plextor 40x scsi cd-rom
ibm scsi HDD ( i cant remember the model number however)
sound blaster live! value
3dfs voodoo 3500 w/ tv in/out
3com pci networking adapter
usb Zip drive
usb compact flash reader
adaptec 2940U2W scsi controller
adaptec scsi controller, but i dont know the exact model, i will find out, but there should not be any conflicts unless i am horribly mistaken

thanks again

Have you disabled the SCSI bios on the card that does not have your boot drive (the UW card)? When you have two SCSI adapters, you need to disable the bios on one of them.

that did not seem to help...actually it caused a kernal crash in WinME, Win2K loaded up normally, but it still can read the driver files or something

Ok, I just read your system specs (which I glossed over before). I'm guessing you are booting off the IDE drives. You should only have the SCSI bios enabled on a card if it is connected to the boot drive.

There may be other things necessary to get your IDE drives and SCSI drive to cohabitate, but I'm not the person to ask about that. I've only ever had SCSI systems. You may want to check out the Adaptec website.

the scsi line auto terminate...

The SCSI card can only auto terminate one end of the chain so make sure your hard disk is terminated unless you installed a terminator on the end of the SCSI cable

Lucas/Essence,

Let us know what kind of SCSI HD you have (U,UW,U2W,U160). If it is an SE device (U,UW) then the last device on the chain (or first if it is the only device on the chain) must be terminated. LVD devices (U2W, U160) cannot be terminated, that is why LVD cables have a terminator on the end.

That appears to be an UW HD. With the 2940 U2W card, you have two options (assuming it is an internal drive):

1) Attach HD with 68-pin UW cable (flat) to the UW 68-pin port on the card. In this case, the termination jumper on the HD must be set to 'on'.

2) Attach HD with 68-pin LVD cable (twisted, free wires) to the LVD 68-pin port on the card. In this case, the termination jumper on the HD must be set to 'off', as the cable is terminated at the end.

You said you get an error when trying to low level format. In that same menu, is this also a 'verify disk media' option? Does that also give you an error?
